Have you ever wondered how bookmakers make a profit? They do so by applying a margin which means that you are offered slightly lower odds than you should be resulting in a profit for the bookmaker regardless of the outcome.

Marathonbet is known for offering very competitive odds which means that they have a low bookmakers margin. However, on certain events and markets, they have taken their generosity one step further and offer customers a 0% margin.

Bookmakers Margin Examples

If you were betting on the outcome of a coin toss, there are two possible outcomes – Heads or Tails. Each has an equal chance of landing and so the true odds on either bet would be evens (2.0). However, if a bookmaker was taking bets on a coin toss, they wouldn’t offer you odds of 2.0 as that would be a 0% margin. Instead, they may offer odds or around 1.90 for Heads and 1.90 for Tails. This would result in a margin of around 5% meaning that they would make £1 profit from every £20 staked.

You can apply this to betting on sports which have more than two outcomes such as the match result of a football match.

To calculate the margin, you simply divide 100 by the decimal odds for each outcome then add the totals up. The amount over 100 is the bookmakers’ margin.

For example, a bookmaker may offer the following odds for the Arsenal v Chelsea match:

  • 4.00 (3/1) Arsenal
  • 3.60 (13/5) Draw
  • 1.90 (9/10) Chelsea

Therefore, the bookmakers’ margin would be:

  • 100/4.00 = 25.000
  • 100/3.60 = 27.778
  • 100/1.90 = 52.632
  • 25.000 + 27.778 + 52.631 = 105.409%
  • Bookmakers’ margin = 5.4%

If Marathonbet were offering a 0% margin on this match, their odds would be greater for each outcome such as:

  • 4.20 (16/5) Arsenal
  • 3.80 (14/5) Draw
  • 2.00 (1/1) Chelsea

Which would result in a margin of:

  • 100/4.20 = 23.809
  • 100/3.80 = 26.316
  • 100/2.00 = 50.000
  • 23.809 + 26.316 + 50.000 = 100.125%
  • Marathonbet Margin = Close to 0%

What Do Lower Margins Mean?

Lower margins mean that the bookmaker pays out more on winning bets. This means that you receive greater returns when your bets win.
