Newcastle United, fresh from their 8-0 thrashing of Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Sunday, welcome Manchester City in the EFL Cup third round to St James’ Park this Wednesday.
Man City extended their unbeaten start in 2023-24 with a 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest.
Newcastle beat Sheffield United by eight goals on Sunday. This was the first ever Premier League match to feature eight players. The Magpies won their largest away win in Premier League history.
Rodri’s moment of madness caused Nottingham Forest to take the foot off the pedal after Man City had raced out to a 2-0 advantage in just 14 minutes.
Rodri, who was dismissed less than one minute after the start of the second period, had been involved in an incident with Morgan Gibbs White. City finished the match with just 10 players, but still won the game.
The champions have the only 100% record of any team in Premier League this season. They began their campaign by winning six consecutive games. Goalkeeper Ederson conceded three goals, helping Man City to achieve the best defensive records in the division.
City won the EFL Cup six times in the last 10 years, including four straight victories from 2018 to 2021. Guardiola’s players are well aware of what is required to win the tournament.
Harvey Barnes, a former Leicester City player, was taken off the field after only 12 minutes of play at Bramall Lane, on Sunday. Barnes sustained a toe-related injury. However, the extent of his injury is not yet known.
Barnes has joined Joelinton and Emil Krafth as Newcastle’s injured goalkeepers, however, backup Martin Dubravka is now fully fit after recovering from an illness.
Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon were all on the bench for Sunday’s crushing of Sheffield United. This means that a number of fringe players may start Wednesday, as Howe wants to keep his team fresh.
Man City’s Kevin De Bruyne is still a long term injury absence due to a thigh issue. Mateo Kovacic and John Stones will also miss their midweek match.
Kalvin Phillips, who is currently on suspension, could start for City in midfield if Guardiola changes his starting line-up. However, 18-year old starlet Rico Lewis, and Matheus nunes, the new signing, are both capable of filling this void.
Erling Haaland, who has eight Premier League goals to his name in just six appearances, will lead the team for City, though the busy City schedule could limit the time he spends on the field, which would allow Julian Alvarez to get more playing time.
Newcastle, buoyed by their Sunday demolition of Sheffield United will look to continue where they left Bramall Lane. Man City, however, will have different ideas.
We expect Magpies will give Guardiola and his men a good fight, but we see City showing their muscle by securing a win that is just narrow enough to get them through.
