The Premier League gets underway this weekend after a shorter than normal break and fans will have eight top-flight matches to enjoy from Saturday – Monday.
In what is his first weekly column, ex Southampton and England midfielder Matt Le Tissier gives us his thoughts on the upcoming matches.
Eight matches take place from Saturday – Monday and it’s my team Southampton who I think the value lies with. They’re away to Crystal Palace and our record at Selhurst Park is good having won the last three meetings without conceding a goal. Unlike Palace, Southampton finished last season strongly and I think at odds of 7/5, they show value for Saturday’s encounter.
Other Saturday games include Fulham v Arsenal and Liverpool at home to Leeds for which I’d have to go with the obvious favourites of Arsenal and Liverpool. West Ham v Newcastle is a little tougher to call and so the draw at 13/5 with BetVictor seems like the safest bet.
I’d probably leave West Ham v Newcastle out of an Acca and so an Arsenal/Liverpool/Southampton multiple just shy of 4/1 seems like a good bet for the opening day. If you want to bump the odds up a bit, taking Liverpool at -1 increases them to 5.7/1 with SpreadEx which could well come in.
Sunday brings us West Brom v Leicester and I think evens is a decent price for an away win. Despite Brendan Rodgers’ side not finishing last season too strong, I think they’ll have too much for Brom.
Everton make the trip to Tottenham also on Sunday and I think it may take a bit of time for their new players to settle in so I’d expect a win for Mourinho on Sunday. The price of evens at home seems to have value.
For the final two games of the opening fixtures, which play on Monday, I fancy an away double with Wolves & Chelsea. Sheff Utd and Brighton may struggle this season and at just a tad over 3/1 for the double, it could be a good bet.
