The US PGA Golf Championship gets underway this week from the Southern Hills course in Tulsa, Oaklahoma.
The last Major to be held at Southern Hills was the US Open back in 2001 but the course underwent a major renovation in 2019 and will play very differently this year. The course is now a par 70 with only two very long par fives and overall measures more than 7500 yards and will provide a very difficult test in the forecast 30c heat as is usually the case with the PGA and strong winds could likely also be a factor . The fairways are fairly generous at Southern Hills but accuracy with irons will be a key factor as the greens are somewhat smaller than average.
All four days of the Tournament are live on Sky Sports and live coverage begins at 1pm Thursday.
Historically the US PGA has often been won by big outsiders and the betting for this year’s renewal is very open with Jon Rahm and Masters winner Scottie Scheffler disputing favouritism at best odds of around 12/1. As usual now in the Golf major tournaments there are some generous each way terms available with Skybet, Paddy Power,Betfair and Coral all offering each way terms of ⅕ odds for 10 places whilst Boylesports go one better paying 11 places.
Finding the winner at Southern Hills is tricky with the recent renovation meaning most of the previous form is not too relevant. However with such generous each way terms finding 1 or 2 players in the top ten should allow us to make a profit.
Our first selection is Hideki Matsuyam of Japan. Matsuyama won his first Major last year at the US Masters and is in very good form right now having just finished a fast finishing third last week in the AT&T Pebble Beach tournament having won the Sony Open early in 2022.
Matsuyama 25/1 Each Way 10 Places – Betfair, Paddy Power, Coral
Our next selection is Cameron Smith who has not yet won a Major but has been knocking on the door now for a few years. The Australian won the Players Championship this year before going on to finish third in the Masters at Augusta. Smith is currently World No.4 and will win a Major very soon. Odds of 25/1 here look too good to pass over.
Cameron Smith 25/1 Each Way 10 Places – Coral
Our third selection is again in great form and has the all round game to win at the highest level and at the toughest of courses. Justin Thomas won the PGA in 2017 and is a prolific winner and tough competitor. Thomas had another top 10 finish at Augusta this year and last week finished well into fifth position at the AT&T Pebble Beach.
Justin Thomas 16/1 Each Way 10 Places Paddy Power, Betfair
