Dustin Johnson heads the betting in this week’s Vivint Houston Open but at a general 7/1 he seems way too short in the week before the US Masters where many players will be putting the final touches to their game before the biggest week of the year. Tips for the US Masters will be published next week . World No.1 Johnson is a worthy favourite but it is a very competitive event this week and the value undoubtedly lies elsewhere.
The venue for this week’s USPGA Tour event is the Memorial Park golf course in Houston which amazingly doubles up as a municipal golf course for the remainder of the year!
The course is a Par 72 of 7400 yards and is expected to yield a lot of birdies and eagles with the driveable par 4 13th and five Par 5’s giving players some great opportunities. The weather forecast is very good for the week with temperatures in the high 20’s and little wind forecast. With generously wide fairways and relatively few bunkers expect some very low scores with the lead changing hands on a regular basis. This is the first time that Memorial Park has hosted this tournament since the 1960s and on top of that, the course was completely renovated last year so there is nor player form on this course to use as a guide.
Tony Finau could very easily bounce back to form this week and odds of 20/1 represents good value for the World number seventeen. Finau has played well in his last two outings with an 11th position in the ZoZo Championship preceded by 8th in the US Open at Winged Foot in very different conditions. Finau is a class act and will find plenty of birdies around Memorial Park, this just might be the event where Finau can turn his undoubted talent into a USPGA win.
Our 2nd pick this week is Scottie Scheffler and the Texan can put up a great show this week in his home state. Scheffler finished 17th in the ZoZo Championship at Sherwood Golf CC last time out and was playing superb golf throughout August including fourth position in the Northern Trust Open. Still waiting for his maiden Tour win, Scheffler is both a long and accurate driver and should be able to cash in on the Par 5’s. At odds of around 25/1 Scheffler is a sound each way bet.
Our final tip for the 2020 Houston Open is Wyndham Clark who went so close to winning in Bermuda last week. Clark is a huge hitter and played extremely well last week including on the Sunday eventually only losing in the Play-Off. Previous to his second in the Bermuda Championship, Clark had finished 13th at the Shriners tournament in Las Vegas and is clearly improving and in the form of his life. At 90/1 he cannot be missed this week.
Bookies are pricing up the Houston Open very competitively and as is so often the case the value lies in the each way markets with William Hill, Betfair Sportsbook and Boylesports offering each way odds of ⅕ for Eight places.
