It’s been a quiet few days on the tipping front as the racing from the UK has been less than inspired, and I’m glad that the week has passed by thus far without any damage done. Now we can get stuck into the good stuff around Clonmel, where there is an intriguing card full of potential bets – and it’s our aim to try and solve these races and find a couple of winners.

Starting with the 1.55, which is a 2m maiden hurdle and looks an open contest on the face of things. Grachhus De Balme is a worthy favorite, however the form of his Navan run – which looked very solid at the time, maybe doesn’t look quite as rosy as before. He can be taken on and I’m going to side with the slightly frustrating Whowonthetoss, who quite frankly should have won one of these races already. His second last time out was a shade disappointing but he boasts some of the best form in this line-up and if able to put everything together, there is no reason why he can’t be richly involved at the business end. Arthur Moore is a very shrewd trainer with his small string and this is a horse of ability, so let’s hope he can run well. At a price of 5/1 with Bet365 – he is an each way bet.

The 3.05 race is a 2m handicap hurdle for horses rated 80-95 and has attracted the full field of 16 to this race at Clonmel, and it is richly competitive. I am going to throw two darts at the board in this race, and the first is the very interestingly campaigned Glenabo Bridge. Having been a winner over a much further trip last season, his efforts this year have been consistent without gaining that elusive third victory of his career. However, he has been slightly tame at the finish of these races and takes a huge step down in trip to 2m. This could run him off his feet, but if managing to stay competitive in the bulk of this race, he will be coming home quicker than most. He is well handicapped on his best form and at a price of 8/1 with Bet365, with 5 places in play, I make him a bet.

The other horse to throw in at a much bigger price in Frazel Express for the canny Jimmy Barcoe yard, that if returning to some of her best form at her previous yard, would have to have a massive chance in these conditions. She is another horse who has been largely campaigned over further as of late, and she has ran better than form figures might suggest on her previous two starts. She is dropping down the weights now and Cathal Landers is a good booking to see for this mare, having been apprentice ridden for her first two starts for this yard. At an enormous price of 28/1 with SkyBet, who also offer 5 places – she is worth an each way bet.

The 3.40 race is a 2m3f handicap hurdle for qualified riders and it is of no surprise to see me putting up long time favorite, Feyan for this race. This mare gave us a great day over the big sticks at Punchestown last month and she was a honest second back over hurdles last time out behind a progressive rival. She could do with jumping a lot more slick on this occasion, but these conditions are well in her favor. She is still very well weighed over hurdles in comparison to her chase mark and if Eoin O’Brien can tidy that jumping up, she would have to have a massive chance. At a price of 6/1 with Paddy Power, who offer 5 places again, she is another each way bet.

The 4.15 is the first chase on the card and is a beginners chase over 2m4f. This does not look like a vintage renewal of any beginners and to be honest, I am very shocked to see the favorite, Cavallino at a backable price. His jumping let him down last time out at Navan, when failing to land a major blow back in third, but his previous second behind Stratum at Thurles was by far the best form in the line up here. He is facing horses that have had some decent form in novice handicaps in recent weeks, but Cavallino brings a much bigger unexposed element to this race and should be backed to collect. I think a price of 9/4 with SkyBet is very good.

And the final port of call for today is the 4.50 race, which is the 2m4f handicap chase for horses rated less than 102. With this sort of contest, you are always going to end up taking a chance on some horse and hoping that he or she can improve for a step into handicap ranks. Perhaps wrongly, I have been convinced that a certain Kilbree Warrior could be that horse and despite being backed off the boards last time out at Punchestown, she again failed to deliver. Her jumping has left a bit to be desired but on point to point form and elements of her hurdling form last year, she should be thrown in off 95 in this race. There are plenty of reasons why this is a leap of faith but sometimes you have to try and trust your gut – and hopefully she can do the business. At a price of 11/1 with SkyBet, with 5 places going, she is worth a risk.
