Sometimes one has to call a spade a spade and move on, today was a disaster. Both selections failed to muster any type of gallop and unfortunately it continues what has been an indifferent run of form since a good start to the month. However, as if the horse racing gods were listening to my calls – we are finally back to some national hunt racing in Ireland, and I can’t wait to get stuck into a good Fairyhouse card tomorrow afternoon and hopefully rectify some of the poor runs from this week.
The 12.15 race is the first order of business for the day, and this 2m5f handicap chase is typically hotly contested and is for horses rated between 0-116. There are plenty going into this with a chance, and I wouldn’t rule anyone out of having a saver on Kristian Goingwel at a bigger price each way. However, preference in this race has to be Castle Town House for the McDonagh / O’Keeffe, who comes into this race off a lenient mark of 101. Having won a deep ground maiden hurdle last season, he has been a slow burner over fences thus far this term and it was only last time out at Limerick that we saw this horse return to form. He finished second on that occasion to the progressive Regina Dracones, and that form looks a lot better than some coming into this race and this is arguably a softer race in ideal conditions. If he can back that effort up off a slightly higher mark, he should bang there in the picture for this race. At a price of 11/2 with SkyBet, who are offering 5 places – should be backed each way.
The 12.50 race is one of the better races on the card and this 2m conditions hurdle has attracted a strong field of six to post. Indigo Breeze and Daly Tiger were good winners of their respective races last time out and should come on for those runs, with that in mind – they will be making up plenty of the market. However, I am a forgiving type, and one would have to be to forgive the recent form of Jessie Harrington. However, she can sometimes go on a streak the other way and she will be due a good bit of form in the coming weeks, and the likeable Autumn Evening holds enough of a chance in this race to hope he can defy the indifferent stable form. He would have gone very close against Teahupoo two starts ago before unseating at 2 out and his run was respectable in a good handicap hurdle over this course and distance in December. At a standout price of 10/3 with Bet365 – he looks a backable price.
The 2.32 race is one to keep the notebooks out for as this maiden hurdle over 2m4f has some nice and likely types for the future. Amirite showed up very nicely in a maiden around Leopardstown, while Prevaricate has shown on more than one instance that he has plenty of ability in the locker, for all that he might not be the most trustworthy. That leaves us with Daily Present, who represents Paul Nolan and Sean O’Keeffe – and these in-form connections might well have a good prospect on their hands with this PtP scorer who was a very solid second on racecourse debt. He was second to Hawai Game, who goes to the Moscow Flyer on Sunday, and they were nicely clear. This looks like another strong race, but it might be a little less competitive than that and he should have a very good chance with basic improvement likely. He’s 5/2 with 888Sport, and he looks a good price based on that.
And the final race on the card is the 3.42 race and is the second division of the 2m4f handicap hurdle for horses rated between 80-95. This is typically low grade stuff and it can often prove wise to side with those nearer the top of the weights, that have some form beside their name. I am hoping for a double for the McDonagh stable – as they saddle top weight Happy Dreams in this contest, who comes here after a good third on handicap bow at Limerick. Prior to that he had finished down the field in three maiden hurdles, but it was no surprise to see this horse improve for the switch to handicaps, and he bumped into a very well treated rival on that occasion in Womalko. There doesn’t look like a horse of that nature lurking in this line up and he must have a fair chance as a result. At a price of 5/1 with SkyBet, who offer 5 places – he should be backed each way.
