Saturday capped off a good finish to the month of October with a fine winner at Down Royal thanks to Mindsmadeup. After having a slightly topsy turvy month of September, it was a relief to be back in the winning thread and hopefully some of you that follow the page and follow Will and I’s selections would have had a more than profitable month. Moving into November now and with the National Hunt season beginning to really hot up, it should make for fascinating viewing. There are two stern cards at Plumpton and Hereford today, and I have a couple of selections to take on the cards with.
Starting off at Hereford, and the 1.55 race – which is a 2m novice hurdle and looks an interesting contest. I am going to be siding with the Oliver Sherwoord trained Imperial Hope – who I’m hoping can put his hurdling experience to good use in this contest. Having won a PtP in Ireland, this horse delivered the goods for current connections on his bumper debut at Doncaster, before following it up with a second placed finish on hurdling debut. The horse that beat him that day, Glencassley – has followed up since and is a solid horse. Imperial Hope shaped that day that a return to a right handed track would aid his cause massively, and a track like Hereford can play into the hands of horses that like being up with the pace. With decent credentials coming into this race, a price of 10/3 with Bet365 seems a fair evaluation.
The second selection from Hereford comes in the 3.25 race, which is the finale on the card and is a 2m mares handicap hurdle for horses rated between 0-120. The ultra progressive Peltwell has won her last five starts and comes into this race with obvious credentials, but one would wonder where the ceiling of her ability lies. Instead, I’m taking a chance on a horse dropping into this class for the first time in a few runs, with the class angle of the race. Cotton End looks a fascinating horse in this race for Sheila Lewis, who has an outstanding record at this track. This mare has already won a few races this summer and provided the ground doesn’t get too chewed up, looks to have a big chance returning in trip to 2m and back into this grade. At a big each way price of 11/1 with 888Sport, and hoping there will be 3 places – I’ll be backing her each way.
The action at Plumpton looks equally intriguing without screaming out with betting opportunities. The only one I can’t let slip past me comes in the 2.45 race, which is the featured 2m4f handicap hurdle and has attracted a good field of 11 to the post. Some people seem quite keen to take him on handicap debut, but I think that The Bomber Liston could well be a step above these and should have a great chance of adding to his novice hurdle score last month at Uttoxeter. That was a very taking performance on seasonal debut and I don’t think he is overfaced by a mark of 122 on handicap debut with James Bowen maintaining his partnership with this horse. A price of 9/4 with William Hill may not appeal to everyone, but it does appeal to me.
