Today, quite simply, is a massive day of flat action as we see the first day of the Irish Champions Weekend take place at Leopardstown, alongside the St Leger at Doncaster. Ante-Post selection for the St Leger – Interpretation, has been well backed from 20s into 12s and I’d be still hopeful of a decent run with Hollie Doyle taking the mount.
As for Leopardstown, I will be starting off with the 1.40 – which is the 1m Matron Stakes and sees a fascinating field go to post in this brilliant contest. Mother Earth has been a model of consistency throughout the summer and holds a clear favourites chance in this line up, however she has also proved this year that she is not unbeatable. For those reasons, as much as she is the most likely winner – she is worth taking on at a price of 6/4. Instead, I’ll be siding with the progressive Pearls Galore, for the excellent trainer Paddy Twomey. Twomey has worked the oracle with this filly in recent weeks, and has back to back wins in decent contests to her name. She is well deserving of this step up in grade, and at a price of 6/1 – she is a good each way bet in this sort of contest.
The 2.10 race, is the often tricky Boomerang Mile, which has got a good list of honours over the years. This year sees the Irish 2000 Guineas winner take his chance, and I think the price one can currently procure on MacSwiney to be farcical. I think he should be much shorter than a price of 9/2 generally would suggest – and I’d be disappointed not to see him rightly involved at the business end of this contest. He has held his form well this year and this step back in trip and into a lesser grade should suit. He should run very well.
The 3.15 is the Paddy Power Stakes over 1m4f and sees a really intriguing runner in the shape of Innisfree line up in this contest, having not been seen since an encouraging run on his return from a two year absence. He showed that he maintained his ability on that occasion, but I wouldn’t be steaming in at a prohibiitive price. Instead, the runner I would side with in this contest is Sir Lamorak, who has made the change between Aidan and Joseph and now has a potential Melbourne Cup bid on his hands. He should be taking high rank in a race such as this if he wants to be involved at that level – and at a price of 7/2 – I’ll take that risk.
Today’s final selction comes in the 3.45 Petingo Handicap and it is a case of if at first you don’t succeed, try again and again and again. I have probably beaten the drum too many times over a horse called Presto, but that doesn’t stop the chance I believe he has of going very close in one of these valuable handicaps at some stage. He is at a big price today but a lot looks in his favour to run well, with course form a notable plus on this occasion. At a price of 33/1 with SkyBet, who offer 6 places – I think he is worth chancing each way in a competitive heat. With plenty having a great chance.
