It was exactly even Stevens with the daily selections yesterday as Daily Present winning cancelled out the two losing bets. Unfortunately it looks like they may have to revert hurdles for Mercury Lane as everything pointed to a huge run yesterday, but ultimately his jumping let him down. Cheltenham is on our doorstep and although I am feeling extremely excited – I have always been a massive fan of the Leinster National card at Naas, and I think it would be remiss not to try and have a go.

Starting with the opening 1.45 race, which is a 2m3f maiden hurdle. Despite there being some big reputations in this line-up, I am going to be siding with Corbeau – with Danny Mullins doing the steering. This horse was a good third on bumper debut last year to Gatsby Grey and has run two very respectable races in defeat over timber this year. His jumping could need a bit of improvement, but that will come with time and he should have learnt plenty from his two defeats. I don’t get the feeling there are any superstars in this line-up, so I am more than willing to take my chance. At a price of 9/2 with Paddy Power, I will be siding with him each way.

Insanity is a great thing, and perhaps it is insanity that is ruling my mind when it comes to the 2.20 race – which is a Grade 3 novice hurdle over 2 miles and sees some of the best horses that are not going to Cheltenham appear. However, I can’t help but feel we have not seen anywhere near the best of the aforementioned Gatsby Grey on his previous two starts and this is a race that his trainer has targeted in years gone by. Having won his maiden impressively at Christmas time, he was well beaten behind Sir Gerhard and was a blatant non-stayer over 2m4f last time, when looking like the winner turning in. This is a decent test of his ability, but everything should be more in his favour today. At a huge price of 33/1 – I am going to take a speculative poke each way.

It will take a little while to finally get around to my other two selections on the card, which both come in the Leinster National itself at 4.40. The starting point is not very original but given I was very close to back Champagne Platinum for the Kim Muir next week, I do believe he is a well handicapped horse and his second behind Death Duty last time was very encouraging. Going into this season, when he joined Enda Bolger – it was not a certainty that this horse was a stayer, given his performances for Nicky Henderson often implied that he wasn’t quite getting home over 3 miles. That has been rebuffed this season, and he should be hitting the line very hard in this race and should hold a massive chance. His price is nothing to shout and roar about, and perhaps backing a 7/2 shot in the Leinster National is not a great move, but I do think he has a cracking chance.

However, there is another JP McManus owned grey horse in this line-up who definitely should be backed also and that is last year’s winner and course veteran, Scoir Mear. This race over the years has a habit of throwing up repeat performers and this horse looks like he has been laid out for a return to this venue and this race after what has been a quiet season overall. He has had one run over hurdles, which you can’t take too much from and he comes here a fresh horse with a good chance. Perhaps he is looking a shade overpriced due to his age, and the fact we haven’t seen him much – but given his connections, that could have been the plan overall. At a price of 14/1 with Paddy Power, who are offering 4 places – he is an each way bet.
