We are only half way through January and it already feels like a very topsy turvy month, which is fairly indicative of the month given the natural inconsistencies of the month. Yesterday was a great day and I can only hope that some people kept the faith and rewarded themselves with a good winning day at Punchestown. Luckily enough, we get to have another bite of the cherry at Punchestown today, with a rare midweek card at the track – and it provides plenty of opportunities to have a bet.

The 12.50 race is the opening maiden hurdle over 2 miles and is for juvenile hurdlers. This is a race to keep the right side of, as plenty of these may well have aspirations for the Boodles Handicap Hurdle down the line, so keep an eye on those finishing well. The Tide Turns looks like a good recruit for the Elliot stable, and the vibes are that he might be the one to beat. However, I have to side with the known form and the mare that I have put up for the Boodles, which is Vera Verto. I am very hopeful of a good run from this horse today, after what has been two very promising efforts in maidens thus far at Cork and Leopardstown. She jumps well and stays well and was a handy filly on the flat, so there are plenty of positives to take from her efforts so far for the Gavin Cromwell yard. This race will qualify her for a handicap, but they would want to be going quite close to ensure that she will be meeting the limit to get into a race like the Boodles. I am hoping she can do the job today, and at a price of 4/1 with William Hill – I’ll take that chance.

The 1.20 race is another handicap hurdle over 2 miles and is for Qualified Riders. We had great success in a QR race yesterday with John Adams and I will be hoping for a decent return on this race as well. By far the most interesting horse in this race is the Shark Hanlon recruit, Cosa Ban – who makes her first start for this stable after almost a year off the track. That absence is a concern, but it has led to her falling 6 pounds in the handicap and she has a decent record of running well fresh, so there are possibilities of a very good run. Shark is a master at improving stable recruits from other yards, and he is not messing around with the booking of Rob James. At a price of 15/2 with Paddy Power, who offer 5 places, she is an each way bet.

The 2.25 race is another handicap hurdle and this time takes place over 2m4f. This race is for horses confined between the rating of 80 and 109, and as a result, plenty of these look quite exposed. That can’t be said for Hgranca De Thaix, who looks very interesting on this return to a staying trip after a decent return at Limerick over Christmas. He was badly outpaced that day over 2m before being never nearer at the finish in fourth, and his runs over the summer would indicate he needs this intermediate trip, as he was a very good second to Socially Distant at Listowel. He has untapped ability and this 5 year old could be the right one for this handicap hurdle. At a price of 6/1 with Paddy Power, who again go with 5 places – he is another each way bet.

The 3.00 race is the 3 mile maiden hurdle on the card and I’m sure plenty will be looking to see whether Minella Crooner can scrub up on his jumping after a very promising second on hurdling debut at Leopardstown. He should win this race given his ability, but his price is very reflective – and I have gone searching in the ‘without the favourite’ market to see whether there was an angle. I feel I have found one with the unexposed Cru Bourgeois, who has been a late bloomer for the Paul Nolan stable, but has always come with a reputation of being a decent type. His runs so far have been indicative of that, and his third last time out over 2m7f was a promising effort. He is suited by this severe test of stamina, and should be able to get involved in the places behind the favorite. At a price of 8/1 ‘Without the Favourite’ on Paddy Power – he is an each way bet at that price.

The final selection of the day comes in the 3.35 race which is a 3m handicap hurdle for horses rated 80-102. A fair few of these are exposed types again, similarly to the 2.25 race and you are trying to side with a horse in-form who may have a bit of improvement still to come. Call Me Freddie looks overpriced in this race on that basis, as he has shown some very solid form since joining his new stable. He was a gambled on winner for old connections in the summer, but his third placed efforts on his last two starts have arguably been better form. Bryan Cooper is booked, which is always a positive for this stable, and he should be able to run a good race from a prominent position. At a price of 14/1 with Paddy Power, who offer 6 places, he is a final each way bet.
