And so here it ends, an up and down, end to end National Hunt season, and we can officially tip our hat to the 2021/2022 season at Punchestown today. Luckily enough for us jumps fans, we will be getting into the nitty gritty for the summer jumps in a week or two’s time, but I will also look forward to trying to get back into the swing of flat racing – as I have neglected it slightly up to this point. However, we are going to go out with a bash with the last day of Punchestown, with a fair few selections to get through.

The opening 2.35 race is the 3m1f Cross Country race and it sees a fair few of the runners from the La Touche Cup only a few days ago take their place yet again. It is a hard gig to run twice in a few days but for some of these horses they love it, and none more so than Singing Banjo. He ran his customary good race in the La Touche, only finding Ballyboker Bridge too good, and he returns here over his favorite banks and on his favorite ground. On ratings alone, he has plenty to find, but that doesn’t count for much in races such as this, and his fluent style of jumping and ability to finish well will be key assets today. Regular pilot Benny Walsh remains on board, and a big run is expected. At a price of 11/2 with Paddy Power, who go 3 places each way – he is a bet.

I am more than happy to throw a few bullets at the board for some races, and the 2.35 is one of them. I am also going to back last year’s winner, Call it Magic – who was running a very big race in the La Touche when unfortunate to come down four fences from home. He is another horse who is in love with this course and distance and this ground is right up his alley as well, so you can look past some dodgy form figures throughout the winter. Local trainer, Ross O’Sullivan has done a brilliant job with this horse and he has been able to bring him back to form before, so there would be no surprise to see this horse run as well as he did in this contest last year. He is 10/1 with Paddy Power, and is also worth an each way bet.

The 3.10 is the long distance 3m7f Colm Quinn Handicap Chase and again I am more than happy to play the two in a ferocious handicap such as this. The whispers before the National were that Anibale Fly might be one to keep the right side of at juicy prices, and unfortunately we never got to see what was to transpire as he was brought down at the third. This high class former Gold Cup horse is now slipping down to very tempting marks and even though time is not on his side, he was third in this race last year off 5 pounds higher and now competes off a lowly 140 for his standards. With Mark Walsh keeping faith, I think he has an each way chance. At a price of 17/2 with Paddy Power, who go 4 places in this race, he is another each way bet.

I am perhaps more forgiving than I should be at times but I couldn’t face seeing The Dabbler run well in this contest (3.10), given my affiliation to the horse over the season. He came unstuck the last day at Fairyhouse, which was an awfully disappointing run, but I am going to chance my arm that the run was too bad to be true and on the basis of a lot of his form, he would have to have a chance in this race. He was second in a Porterstown Chase earlier in the season, and he loves good ground and staying trips. I don’t think he is too badly handicapped either, but we will have to see. At a price of 12/1 with Paddy, he is another each way bet.

The 3.50 Champion Mares Hurdle over 2m4f is perhaps one of the most competitive Grade 1 races we have seen all week and it is hard to know what to make of the race as a whole. For me personally, I would be disappointed if Epatante could not confirm superiority over some of these mares, but at the price she is – she can go win without me losing sleep. The without market is intriguing though, as it is hard to know what to make of the Mares Hurdle form. Maries Rock was the winner, but both Telmesomethingirl and Mrs Milner have every right to feel slightly aggrieved after being badly hampered. Mrs Milner was the one that struck me most at the prices and although it is not a massive price to be backing each way, the 4/1 about her in the ‘without Epatante’ market, strikes me as each way value with 3 places being played.

The action is relentless at Punchestown and the 4.25 is a 3m handicap chase, and yet again this handicap looks a frightening one on paper to get to the bottom of. I have been very sweet a few times on a horse called Donkey Years, who has run some very credible races in defeat over the last few starts, and deserves to get his head in front for one of these pots. He is the pick of Mark Walsh on this occasion and if he replicates the form of his runs at Leopardstown and Fairyhouse the last twice, he should be bang in the mix. A price of 13/2 with Paddy Power, who go 4 places – looks an each way bet.

I am also going to take a wild swing at the Dempsey horse in this race as well, who has been disappointing this season but he will have no excuses on a track that he likes and on ground that he enjoys. The horse in question is Ten Ten, who was second only to the impressive Brahma Bull in this race. There does not look like any of those lurkers in the race this year and if he can find his feet in the first mile of the race, he is sure to run well. His jumping has been hit and miss this season, but I would be hopeful there could be a big run from him. At 18/1, you can take a chance at those prices each way.

After a needed break for a drink of water, my final selection of the day comes in the 5.30 race, which is the 2m3f handicap hurdle. Plenty of these ran some good races at the Cheltenham Festival and it will be interesting to see whether they will be able to return to that level of form on the back of some hard seasons. I am going to take a chance that stepping back up in trip could unlock some needed improvement out of He’s a Hardy Bloke – who ran a big race when fourth at Fairyhouse last time out. He was trapped for room at a crucial time and flew home at the death, indicating that he could run well back on this trip. He is a quirky sort at times but has a lot of ability and I am hopeful he can run well. At a price of 10/1, with 5 places being paid by Paddy Power – he is my last bet of the National Hunt season proper.
