Not to be yesterday at Ayr, with the two runners just not running to expectations. Sauce of Life looked like he bumped into a good rival, while Le Cheval Noir was never on a going day and looked beaten far too early out to think that was his proper running. However, these days do happen and with the racing quite particular in the midweek, I’m trying to be as precise as possible. They have got the go ahead at Southwell this afternoon, and I have two selections from the card and hopefully the two can run a little bit better than their counterparts yesterday afternoon.
Starting in the opening race, which is the 12.25 and is a handicap chase over 2m4f and is for horses rated between 0-120. There are only six runners going to post on this occasion, but there could be plausible cases made for at least four of these, so it is no easier to find a winner than a bigger field. Percussion has found himself at the top of the betting, but he is not a horse that would do it for me on this occasion, with his lack of experience and this step up in grade. His second over this course and distance on his chase debut was an eye-catching effort, but he is against better horses on this occasion and will have to prove he is up to the task.
Instead, preference is for Cawthorne Lad, who represents the Jonjo O’Neill stable, which is still in great form to start this National Hunt season. I was actually in attendance when this horse won at Stratford last time out, when finishing with great aplomb to take a 0-115 in the most facile way possible. He has raised nine pounds for that effort, but it was one in the style of a horse who would have no problems in going in again, and this is what I’m hoping he will do. The one thing that was a question mark at Stratford was his jumping in the early stages of the race, so I’m hoping he has learned from that and can put in a better round of jumping. If jumping with more fluency on this occasion, he is well better than a mark of 120 and could take some stopping. At a best price of 10/3 with Bet365, he should go close.
The other race that captures my interest is the 1.25, which is a tricky five runner 2m novices handicap chase, and sees a decent but select field go to post. Light N Strike won impressively last time out, and I am a big fan of young Jack Wildman, who is able to claim 10 pounds because he is riding for his retained stable of Emma Lavelle. He has been hiked up the weights though and has to prove he can back it up. Across the Line ran a solid race last time out but he is not a horse that would do it for me, and I don’t think the form is up to a whole pile and would be willing to sway as a result.
That leaves me with Isolate, who has been a horse that I have struggled to get a grip of in recent starts – but he looks like he would have a big chance in this race on his best form. He won very impressively two starts back at Kempton, in the style of a real improver, when beating today’s rival Light N Strike in impressive fashion. However, he inexplicably bombed out last time out at Kempton, which has left many scratching their heads coming into today’s race. I am going to take a chance that he can return to some of his better form on this occasion, which would put him right in the mix off this mark of 122. With Tom Cannon back in the saddle today, he should go well. I have backed him at a price of 3/1 with Bet365.
