Christmas is nearing and despite some relative uncertainties around the majority of us in Ireland and Britain at the moment, the one constant is that racing is still on the table for us to watch and enjoy. There was some top action from Ascot yesterday, and there are a few good races to tuck into from Thurles today. I’m keeping the fingers crossed that I’ll be able to attend the Christmas meeting in Leopardstown next Sunday on the 26th – where there will be bumper amounts of articles and videos in the coming week.
In Thurles today, I like a couple and it starts in the 12.40 race, which is the prestigious Tim Molony cup over 3m1f. This is relatively low grade stuff as you could imagine for a race of this nature, but plenty of trainers try desperately hard to win this event given its history. On this occasion, I think the horse to be interested in is Laughing Trix, who fell last time out for Dermot McLoughlin when looking like he was going to fill the frame behind All Class. That rival was seriously progressive and there does not look like anything as unexposed or as well handicapped in this race. He had won the time before and a mark of 91 should not be the highest this horse can achieve. As a result, he is still of a low weight in this contest and should be feared. At a standout price of 9/1 with Bet365, who are offering 5 places – he is a good each way bet.
The 1.10 race is the 2m2f handicap chase and is also a competitive race, but with only 8 runners going to post on this occasion. You could make a case for any of the 8 in truth, but perhaps the play is to side with the veteran course specialist, All the Chimneys. This horse has been a grand servant for connections and has won his fair share of races, and tends to put in all of his best running around this track and this in-between trip seems to suit him well also. He is off top weight of 120, which is not particularly lenient, but he seems a bit more solid than others to run a credible race and should be backed as a result. Bet365 are also offering a standout price of 8/1, which I think is far too big, and should be backed each way as a result.
The 1.40 race is the feature race on the card and is the 2m Boreen Belle Mares Novice Hurdle over 2m. For a listed contest, this does not look like a strong renewal of the race and it probably revolves around Braganza, who was a good winner on debut for Willie Mullins after nearly 5 years off the track. She won an okay maiden and could take some beating if not bouncing second time out. Instead, I am much more in favour of Lunar Display – who brings the solid form to the table. She was a handy second to Hollow Games and Chemical Energy in her last two starts, and she now returns to mares company. The step back down in trip could cause a little concern, but I’m hoping that they make it a test and stamina could come into play. If it does, she should be right there. At a price of 2/1 with Bet365, I’m hoping she runs well.
