It has been a difficult last couple of days as the racing has been tricky and certain results have not gone as planned. I have hit the crossbar a number of times over the last week or so, and although I wasn’t on the money yesterday, there was still a place from the two selections to go home with. The racing today from Wexford is certainly not vintage, but there are some testing handicaps that have caught my eye, and hopefully the two selections I am about to put up can run with a certain degree of credit.
The first race I will be tackling is the 6.45 race, which is a 2m1f handicap hurdle for horses rated between 80-95 and this is one of the typical contests one can find around Wexford, which is unnervingly tricky to find the winner of. Final Endeavour is your favorite, having won earlier in the week on the flat and must have a chance as a result. However, his hurdling form is desperate and I am looking to take him on as a result. Despite not boasting brilliant form figures either, I feel there may be some merit in thinking that Duffy’s Hodey may still improve past the mark he has right now and this is the worst handicap that he has encountered in his career so far. This 5 year old gelding ran a few okay races in maidens before shaping very nicely on his handicap debut at Limerick. He was poor last time out but hopefully he can return to some better form on better ground. At a price of 5/1 with Paddy Power, who are offering 4 places, he should be backed each way.
The second race I will be covering for the day is the 7.45 race, which is another handicap hurdle but this time around it is over 3 miles. Plenty of these are relatively exposed at this point and will have to find a little bit of improvement from somewhere if they are to get their head in front. A horse who may not be as exposed as the rest of them is the mare, Maura Jeanne – who shaped very nicely last time out in a good race and should appreciate dropping back into this sort of race. She was third to the impressive Chinx of Light, and has retained her mark of 91, which should be reasonable given the form she has been able to accrue. At a price of 6/1 with Bet365, who are offering 4 places, she should be backed each way.
