WhichBookie racing analyst Andrew Blair White provides a preview and betting tips for races at Roscommon on Monday 23rd May.
Argentina vs Saudi Arabia is the match that opens day two of the 2022 World Cup and will take place at Qatar’s largest venue, the Lusail Iconic Stadium which has an impressive 80,000 seats and will also host the final of the tournament.
These two sides were drawn into Group C along with Mexico and Poland which is a relatively competitive group that feature some good teams.
Argentina are one of the favourites to win this year’s World Cup and are priced at around 10/1 to do so. They have a host of world-class players who belong on the big stage and will be eager to improve on their Round of 16 finish at Russia 2018 when they were knocked out by France in a thrilling match that finished 4-3.
Argentina have a good record at the World Cup, as you would expect, having qualified for every finals since 1974. They won the World Cup in both 1978 & 1986 along with reaching the final in 1990 & 2014. Although both Mexico and Poland do pose a threat should Argentina not be on top form, they are expected to reach the knockout stages of the tournament and are big favourites to win their opening match.
This will be the sixth World Cup finals that Saudi Arabia have featured in. However, they have only made it out of the group stages once and that was back in 1994 and are again underdogs to progress with being priced at 7/1 to qualify from their group.
An opening match against a team ranked #4 in the FIFA world rankings is perhaps not they would have chosen and it will surely prove to be a big ask for them to take anything away from this game.

It’s no surprise to see Argentina as the big favourites in this match and they’ll be confident of picking up three points to get their World Cup campaign off to a good start. They’re priced at 1/4 for the win and although this is by far the most likely outcome, it’s not a hugely appealing price unless you’re adding it into a World Cup accumulator.
If you’re having a bet on this game, it may be best to look at other markets which perhaps provide a bit more value and more appealing odds such as the HT/FT market from which you can get odds of 4/5 for Argentina to be winning at half-time and full-time.
Despite having an impressive record in matches over recent years, Argentina haven’t proved to be the most prolific of scorers and so I’d be slightly reluctant to wager big on the Handicap market. Odds of 7/4 are available on Argentina -2 which I wouldn’t be 100% comfortable with.
Along with the HT/FT selection, I’d also consider Under 2.5 Goals which is priced at 23/20 with Parimatch.
