Horse Racing analyst Will Smith has had a good look at all this weekend's ante-post markets, and provides a 7/1 EW selection in the Grade 2 novices' chase at Newbury on Friday.
In a pivotal Euro 2024 qualification encounter, the Faroe Islands face off against Poland at Torsvollur. As both teams seek to bolster their standings in Group E, the stakes are undeniably high. Faroe Islands, currently languishing at the bottom of the group, find themselves with a solitary point in their five previous outings. Poland, on the other hand, stand in fifth place, trailing second-placed Czech Republic by just two points.

The Faroe Islands, with a population of approximately 52,000, have always faced an uphill battle in their quest to qualify for major international tournaments. Their qualification campaign thus far has yielded only a single point, earned in a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Moldova in March. Mads Mikkelsen’s first-half goal was cancelled out by a late Ion Nicolaescu equaliser, which was the last point they added to their tally.
The recent performances of Faroe Islands in all competitions have been disheartening. They have suffered five consecutive losses, managing to find the net only twice during this dismal run. Regrettably, their chances of securing a spot in Euro 2024 now seem exceedingly slim.
In stark contrast, Poland have a more promising path to Euro 2024. The team has accumulated six points in their initial five Group E encounters, positioning them just two points adrift of the second-placed team and four points behind the group leaders, Albania. However, they may be less than satisfied with their performance up to this juncture, particularly in away fixtures.
Poland have been subpar on the road, losing all three of their matches in foreign territories, with defeats against the Czech Republic, Moldova, and Albania. In their most recent away match against Albania, Poland’s attack faltered, mustering only a single shot on target and ultimately succumbing to a 2-0 defeat.
Nonetheless, Poland should carry a sense of optimism into Thursday’s match. They convincingly triumphed over the Faroe Islands in the reverse fixture, securing a 2-0 victory, with the prolific Robert Lewandowski netting a brace.

Mikkelsen, in solid form for Klaksvik, with two goals and six assists in 19 league games this season, could make a return to the starting lineup. He’s one of the few Faroe Islands players to have scored in Euro 2024 qualifying. Mikkelsen may partner with striker Joan Simun Edmundsson, who has found the net eight times in 79 appearances for his country.
For Poland, captain Lewandowski, who has notched three goals in Euro 2024 qualifying, is a pivotal figure. Piotr Zielinski, who has displayed fine form for Napoli with two goals in his last four games, is expected to join Grzegorz Krychowiak in central midfield.
Faroe Islands: Lamhauge; Sorensen, Faero, Vatnhamar, Davidsen; Bjertalid, Hendriksson, Mikkelsen, Johansen; Olsen, Edmundsson
Poland: Szczesny; Bereszynski, Kedziora, Bednarek, Kiwior; Cash, Krychowiak, Zielinski, Kaminski, Szymanski; Lewandowski
Poland’s struggles away from home notwithstanding, their superior quality compared to the Faroe Islands was evident in the previous encounter. As such, we anticipate a comfortable victory for Poland, one that could significantly enhance their prospects of securing a place in Euro 2024.
