Horse Racing analyst Will Smith has had a good look at all this weekend's ante-post markets, and provides a 7/1 EW selection in the Grade 2 novices' chase at Newbury on Friday.

The German Bundesliga gets underway over the first weekend of August with Bayern Munich looking to claim their 11th consecutive league title. Although they are the heavy favourites to top the league, there are other ante-post markets worth looking at which is what I’ll be doing today.
There’s not much to say about this market as there won’t be many expecting anything other than a 32nd league title for Bayern.
The giants of the Bundesliga have dominated the league for several years now, winning in the last 10 seasons with the closest any other team coming to disrupting them being Dortmund who finished the 2018/19 season trailing Bayern by just 2 points. To the woe of their rivals, they’ve further strengthened their squad with the addition of Sadio Mane from Liverpool and Noussair Mazraoui and Ryan Gravenberch from Ajax amongst others.
Bayern will be without the leagues top scorer for the past five consecutive seasons with Robert Lewandowski moving to Barcelona. However, with the ability to attract the best talent in the world, they won’t be short of options and they’ve also recruited the services of 17-year-old French forward, Mathys Tel from Ligue 1 club Rennes.
It’s won’t come as any surprise to see that Bayern are odds-on favourites to top the league again come the end of the season and are priced at just 1/5 with most bookies. However, with 10 straight title wins in a row, that’s to be expected and even without their star finisher, I can’t bring myself to back RB Leipzig at 14/1 or Dortmund at 10/1 who themselves lost Erling Haaland to Manchester City this summer.

Schalke and Werder Bremen were promoted last season and neither are strangers to the top-flight. Both dropped down into Bundesliga 2 in the 2020/21 season but managed to bounce straight back up at the first attempt with Schalke topping the table with 65 points and Bremen 2 points adrift. After between three and four decades in German’s top league, neither will want to drop down again and I’m confident that others will be below them come the end of the season.
One of those teams could be Bochum who finished 13th last season. However, other than the bottom two, Thomas Reis’s side were the lowest scorers in the league, averaging just 1.12 goals per game. After 11 seasons in the second division, a 13th-place finish may not look to bad. However, there have been several departures from the club that could hurt them badly.
Sebastian Polter and Milos Pantovic were Bochum’s top scorers last season but neither will feature in their upcoming campaign after they have left for Schalke and Union Berlin. Southampton have caused some worry at the other end of the pitch too with Armel Bella-Kotchap accepting a move to St Mary’s.
Overall, it’s not looking great for Bochum and I’d back them to finish in the bottom two at odds of 9/4 and even a bottom 3 finish at Evens has some appeal.

Other than Lewandowski and Haaland, Bayer Leverkusen forward Patrik Scnik was the stand-out player in terms of goals scored last season. The Czech found the net 24 times in the league finishing as the second top scorer with 24 goals. He’s the bookies’ joint-favourite at 8/1 to bag the most this season along with Bayern’s new recruit, Sadio Mane, followed by RB Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku (9/1) and Andre Silva (14/1) and my selection, Karim Adeyemi.
The 20-year-old signed for Dortmund this summer from Red Bull Salzburg where he scored 19 goals in 27 league appearances and a total of 23 in all competitions. He’ll be an exciting prospect to watch this season and if he finds his feet quickly with his new club, he should be in the running for top scorer. Adeyemi is a World Cup Top Scorer tip at a price of 50/1 and with Germany expected to do well in the tournament, he could be a reasonable longshot punt.
