Film lovers are looking forward to the awards season next month when the BAFTAs (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) take place on 14 March followed by the 94th Academy Awards ceremony on 27 March. On the global stage, the Academy Awards take precedence but Academy voters will definitely be looking at the BAFTA winners and losers before the Oscars voting ends on 22 March.
There is a lot of speculation about the outcome in the various different categories for the BAFTAs and a couple of bookmakers have joined in the fun by allowing film buffs to vote on the top categories of Best Film, Best Actor and Best Actress. If you tune in to the BAFTA awards ceremony, it can make your evening more entertaining and potentially rewarding if you have selected the final winners.
The BAFTAs are going through a period of transition after a disastrous time two years ago when all 20 nominations for the acting categories were white actors and actresses. The subsequent review by chairman Krish Majumdar has led to significant changes to broaden BAFTA’s membership and change members’ protocols for viewing and voting, in order to ensure a more inclusive outcome. As a result, there are some intriguing nominations this year.

Several awards are given out at the ceremony such as the Rising Star Award, Best British Film, Best Supporting Actor, Best Direction, Best Short Film and many others. However, there are three main categories that are more popular than others when it comes to betting on the BAFTAs.
The Power of the Dog is the lead contender for Best Film at the BAFTAs with bookie Coral offering odds of 4/6 that Jane Campion’s western will win next month. But Campion’s gripping psychological drama is facing a major challenge from Sir Kenneth Branagh whose semi-autobiographical film, Belfast, is truly unique. Branagh’s portrayal of a young boy’s childhood in the midst of the tumultuous environment of the last 1960s in Belfast has struck a chord with film fans everywhere and odds of 15/8 from William Hill make it the main competition for The Power of the Dog.
The remaining nominations are the American apocalyptic film Don’t Look Up starring Leonard DiCaprio, epic sci fi film Dune starring Zendaya and Timothee Chalamet, and coming-of-age film Licorice Pizza.
Only two of the nominees for Best Actor are also nominated for an Oscar. Will Smith is the overwhelming favourite in America to win his first Oscar for his portrayal of Richard Williams, father of tennis stars Serena and Venus Williams, in King Richard. But bookie William Hill offers odds of 7/4 that he will win the BAFTA, making him second favourite behind Briton Benedict Cumberbatch at odds of 4/6 from Betfred. Cumberbatch’s fantastic portrayal of a domineering, cruel and troubled rancher was matched by his co-stars, all three of whom are nominated for Best Supporting Actor/Actress Oscars. But BAFTA has failed to nominate Kirsten Dunst for her role in the film. Leonardo DiCaprio is nominated for Don’t Look Up, as is Adeel Akhtar for Ali & Ava. Mahershala Ali is nominated for his role in Swan Song and Stephen Graham is the final nominee for his role in Boiling Point.
The disparity between the Academy Awards and the BAFTAs is most stark this year in the Leading Actress category. Oscar nominees Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Stewart , Jessica Chastain, Penelope Cruz and Briton Olivia Coleman have been completely overlooked by BAFTA. The clear favourite to take home the BAFTA is Lady Gaga for her true-life portrayal of Patrizia Reggiani, the vengeful ex-wife of Maurizio Gucci, whose murder she masterminds. Betfred offers odds of 6/4 that she will win, making her runaway favourite ahead ahead of her rivals – Alana Haim (Licorice Pizza), Emilia Jones (CODA), Renate Reinsve (The Worst Person in the World), Joanna Scanlan (After Love) and Tessa Thompson (Passing).
Best Director
Many film fans will be completely bamboozled by the glaring omission of Sir Kenneth Branagh in the nominations list this year. Nonetheless, his film Belfast is nominated for Best Film and the Outstanding British Film categories which may provide him with some consolation. The Academy Awards voters beg to disagree with BAFTA members, and Branagh is deservedly nominated for the Best Director Oscar.
There is little surprise that Jane Campion, Australian writer and director of The Power of the Dog, leads the betting for the Best Director category, with odds of 1/6 from bookie Betfred making her the overwhelming favourite to win. Other contenders include Aleem Khan for his film After Love and Paul Thomas Anderson for Licorice Pizza, both with odds of 14/1 from William Hill. Also nominated are Ryusuke Hamaguchi for Drive My Car (odds of 16/1 from Coral) and French directors Audrey Diwan for Happening and Julia Ducournau for Titane ( with odds of 18/1 and 20/1 respectively from Betfred making them outside chances).
Rising Star Award
The Rising Star Award is the only award at the British Academy Film Awards voted for by the public. Past winners include talented stars James McAvoy, Tom Hardy, Kristen Stewart, Daniel Kaluuya, Shia LaBeof and Tom Holland. This year the diverse nominees include favourite Lashana Lynch (with Irish bookie Betfred offering odds of 5/4 that she will win). The 34-year old is riding a wave just now, following her role as a new 007 agent in the most recent Bond movie, No Time to Die and her past work on screen and stage has depth and variety. Kodi Smit-McPhee and Ariana DeBose are also fancied (both with odds of 2/1 from the same bookie). Millicent Simmonds and Harris Dickinson are nominated but remain outsider chances to win the award with odds of 12/1 and 16/1 respectively. The award honours a performer who has shown truly outstanding talent on the big screen in the past year and captured the attention of both the public and film industry
