The BBC Sports Personality of the Year, or SPOTY, as it is sometimes referred to as, is an award that is given out at the ceremony that takes place in December of each year.
The award was created in 1954 and has since handed out no less than 68 of the prestigious awards that recognise the finest sportsmen and women in the UK.

The 2022 BBC Sports Personality of the Year ceremony will take place in December as it does every year.
The official date of the event has yet to be announced but as it usually takes place on a Sunday evening midway through the month, we expect it to be on Sunday 18th December 2022.
The shortlist is not released until a few weeks before the ceremony and so we won’t know the official nominees for the 2022 award until late November.

There have been 68 winners of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year since it was created in 1954 with many sporting greats gaining recognition via the public vote for their contributions to their trade.
Only five people have won the award more than once – Andy Murray three times and boxer Henry Cooper and F1 drivers Damon Hill, Nigel Mansell and Lewis Hamilton winning it twice.
