The BBC Sports Personality of the Year, or SPOTY, as it is sometimes referred to as, is an award that is given out at the ceremony that takes place in December of each year.
The award was created in 1954 and has since handed out no less than 68 of the prestigious awards that recognise the finest sportsmen and women in the UK.
The shortlist for the award is usually released a few weeks prior to the ceremony and although this is put together by an expert panel, it is the public vote that decides which contender wins.

The majority of people who bet on BBC Sports Personality of the Year place their bet on who they think will win the award. However, there are a couple of other betting options available when placing your bets online.
Betting on the winner of BBC Sports Personality of the Year is the most popular bet and all of the betting sites on this page have odds available now.
When betting on the winner, you can either place your bets early before the shortlist is announced or wait until it’s released and place your bets on one of the nominees.
The advantage of placing your bets early is that you are offered bigger odds as they are not guaranteed to make the shortlist.
An interesting betting market is to place a bet on a contender without the favourite.
Let’s say that Emma Raducanu was a very strong favourite to win the award but you didn’t want to bet on her because the odds were so low. With this market, you can bet on who will win without Emma Raducanu and so essentially, betting on who will come second if Emma Raducanu was to win.
If you think a sportsman or woman has a chance of winning but up against other strong candidates, you may wish to back them to finish in the top three rather than to win the award.
We’ve listed some BBC Sports Personality of the Year odds in the table above but if you head to any of the betting sites featured on this page, you’ll find the latest odds.
The BBC Sports Personality of the Year betting section is usually found in the ‘TV’ or ‘Specials’ categories.
