Belgium and Slovakia meet for the first time in over 10 years in what marks their first Group E match set to take place at the Venue Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt on Monday 17th June at 5pm (GMT). Belgium has performed well in the qualifiers under their new coach Domenico Tedesco, highlighted by their quality ball control and strategic play. Slovakia has also shown potential, most notably in their strong defensive efforts, having kept multiple clean sheets and conceded only 1 goal by the European powerhouse Portugal. This game will be an intriguing watch and although Belgium are the clear favourites, it might not be a walk in the park. Keep reading for some top tips as we delve deeper into how this match might play out.
Belgium will want to utilise their offensive strength in this year’s Euro’s, boasting dominant midfield players like Youri Tielemans and and Kevin De Bruyne who create chances out of nowhere, and let’s not forget Romelu Lukaku, a top-tier striker who scored four goals in a single match against Azerbaijan in the final game of the qualifiers. With Belgium’s ferocious attacking threats, betting on Belgium to score at least 2 goals would make for a good bet. On the other hand, Slovakia do have a good defence consisting of central defender Milan Skriniar and defensive midfielder Stanislav Lobotka, so it’s likely Slovakia will try to catch Belgium on the counterattack. However, Belgium’s top-tier squad should have no problem intercepting any attacks, and with Slovakia on the back foot, Both Teams to Score – No, would also be a good bet.
Belgium’s coach Domenico Tedesco has bucket loads of talent at his disposal, and in comparison to Slovakia’s rather mediocre squad, it makes sense that Belgium is the clear favourite. Despite Slovakia’s defensive efforts, Belgium’s depth and quality to control the ball, create opportunities and then finish them, gives them the upper hand in this match. Expect Belgium to own possession, play the ball out wide and whip the ball into Lukaku’s domain, and shots from outside the box from Tielemans and and Druyne.
Romelu Lukaku, backed up by world-class playmakers, should be able to capitalise on what we expect will be multiple scoring opportunities. Slovakia are heavily reliant on their defence, and although they’ll try to catch Belgium on the counterattack, they don’t have the opposing talents to unsettle Belgium’s defence, anchored by seasoned Jan Vertonghen. Reflecting on Slovakia’s most probable game-plan to defend, and Belgium’s diverse squad, ability to hold possession, and experience to manoeuvre tough opponents, we predict a 2-0 victory for Belgium.
Given Slovakia’s unthreatening attack and likely game-plan, we don’t expect any goals from them. On the other side, Belgium certainly has the players to score goals, but considering Slovakia have kept low scoring games against high profile teams, it won’t be easy for them to find the back of the net, which is why we predict Under 2.5 Goals for this match.
