Our golf tipster continued his hot streak last week and was desperately unlucky not to follow up that recent 50/1 winner with another victory. Hideki Matsuyama looked to have the Phoenix Open sewn up, holding a one shot lead heading down the final hole, only to make bogey and lose out in a playoff. It was a painful near miss. There was still plenty to take from the week though, with Jake Knapp landing an each way return at 35/1.
The PGA Tour heads back to California for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, the first Signature Event of the season. Our man returns with three each way selections ranging from 12/1 to 28/1.
Few venues in golf are as recognisable as Pebble Beach. Perched along the rugged Pacific coastline, the course has staged countless iconic moments. Measuring just under 7,000 yards and playing to a par 72, it is not overly demanding from the tee, but its small greens place a huge emphasis on precision with approach shots.
The format has changed in recent years, with the event now contested across Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill before the weekend returns to the host layout. A limited field and no cut means everyone is guaranteed four rounds, often encouraging aggressive play and plenty of birdie chances.
Spyglass provides a sharp contrast. Tree lined and slightly longer, it tends to play as the sterner test, while Pebble’s main defence is the weather. When the wind picks up off the ocean, club selection becomes tricky and even the world’s best can be left exposed.
So what typically separates the winner from the pack here? Accurate iron play has long been a reliable indicator, with many champions ranking near the top for greens in regulation. A confident putter is just as important, especially on Poa annua surfaces that can become bumpy as the day wears on. Players comfortable on these greens often gain a significant edge.
Course knowledge has also proven valuable over the years. While bombers can contend, length is far from essential, and patience usually outweighs raw aggression. Fast starts matter too. Historically, most winners have positioned themselves close to the lead early, making it a tournament where momentum can build quickly.
That said, Pebble has produced its fair share of surprise champions. Long priced winners are not uncommon, and once a player finds rhythm on these greens, leaderboards can change in a hurry. With scoring opportunities available and risk lurking along the coastline, no lead ever feels entirely secure.
If last week was anything to go by, another strong showing could be just around the corner as the action unfolds on one of golf’s most famous stages.
