Deutsche Bank Park, the home stadium of Eintracht Frankfurt, plays host to the Group C clash between Denmark & England. Kick-off is scheduled for 5pm (GMT).
This will be England’s second match of Euro 2024 and possibly one of their toughest in the group stages. Serbia do pose a threat but Denmark are a much more organised side and have a decent record against England having remained unbeaten within 90 minutes in their past three encounters.
The last time these two sides met was in the semi-final of Euro 2020. England were big favourites going into that game but Mikkel Damsgaard silenced fans with an impressive goal from a free-kick at the 30-minute mark. It took an own goal from Danish defender Simon Kjaer to get England back in the game and the match remained 1-1 upon the final whistle. Thankfully, Harry Kane was able to follow up from his missed penalty in extra time to give England the lead and send them into the final of the competition where they would meet Italy.
Denmark finished top of their qualifying group, amassing 22 points from a possible 30, with losses coming against Kazakhstan (3-2) and Northern Ireland (2-0). Although Kasper Hjulmand’s side finished top of their group, and reached the semi-finals of the Euro’s back in 2020, their qualifying campaign wasn’t the most convincing. They only managed to beat San Marino 2-1 away from home and struggled to run away with games against many opponents. The addition of 20-year-old Rasmus Højlund is a big boost for them. He’s started to show a bit form for Manchester United and fills a gap in the side that was one of the reasons they had such a poor World Cup two years ago. However, they beat France twice in the Nations League back in 2022 and were unlucky not to get something out of their game against them in the World Cup with a late goal from Mbappe leaving them with just a single point from the group games. They shouldn’t be written off, and England will have to be switched on if they’re going to take away three points from the match.
I’ll be taking a punt on England scoring a free-kick in this game and so pick from who you fancy the most. Although the obvious choice, Harry Kane to score from a set piece is at a price still attractive enough for a small wager.
Gareth Southgate will be well aware that Denmark have the potential to cause an upset which will make heading into their final group stage match against Slovenia five days later a nervy one. I’m not expecting England to run away with this game, but they should have the quality to see it out as winners, even if it is by a relatively small margin
Prediction: Draw HT / England FT
Possession will likely be the main aim for England in this match. Buying their time whilst in control of the ball and hopefully taking the lead. If they do manage to go ahead, lets hope that Southgate doesn’t opt for too defensive tactics which would result in an uncomfortable finish.
Prediction: Denmark 0 – 1 England
This may very well be England’s toughest fixture of the group stage and is one that Southgate will not want to lose. As such, a low-scoring 90-minutes is expected with England hopefully doing enough to pick up the full 3 points and ease the pressure heading into their final group match against Slovenia the following Tuesday.
I’d be willing to take a chance on Under 2.5 goals in this game.
Prediction: Under 2.5 Goals
