Underdogs Albania have been dealt a difficult card for their first Euro 2024 encounter, having to go against the defending champions Italy at Signal Iduna Park stadium in Dortmund at 8pm (GMT). Albania, ranked 66th in the world surprised us during the qualifiers with an astonishing undefeated run of seven games, showcasing their determination and improvements under coach Sylvinho. Italy’s experience and squad depth make them the clear favourites in what promises to be an exciting clash between a European powerhouse and underdog spirit.
Although Albania’s undefeated run in the qualifiers was impressive, we wonder if it was temporary as the momentum has started to shift in the wrong direction after losing 3-0 to Chile and then 1-0 to Sweden. It’s worth noting that Albania’s qualifying matches were against much weaker teams compared to Italy, and after these losses, we’re doubtful they can deal with the pressure of a higher calibre team like Italy. Italy boasts some world-class players like Nicolo Barella and Federico Chiesa and considering their recent form and desire to defend their title, they should make easy work of controlling the game. Our top tip is to bet on Italy to win in both halves.
Albania have only managed to score one goal in their past four matches and without any world-class attackers, it’s unlikely we’ll see them putting it past keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. Despite recent performances, Albania have shown defensive strengths throughout the qualifiers, and they’ll likely try to employ a defensive strategy against such a dominant team. However, Italy have the ability to break down stubborn defences and should make easy work of creating plenty of scoring opportunities, so we predict an easy three points for Italy.
With Italy’s defensive record and Albania’s lack of attacking threats, we’re leaning towards a 3-0 victory for Italy. Italy should be able to exploit weaknesses in Albania’s defence, leading to countless scoring opportunities. Under immense pressure put on by Spalletti’s squad, Albania will likely crumble, leading to mistakes that Italy can capitalise on. Betting on a clean sheet for Italy could also be a good bet.
Albania will likely adopt a defensive strategy in the hopes they can catch Italy off guard, but we don’t see this preventing Italy from creating a lot of scoring opportunities. If anything, it allows Italy to control possession and put continuous pressure on Albania, with the aim to wear them down and take advantage of any gaps that open up. With Italy’s experience and squad depth, we expect it to be a walk in the park for them, which is why we recommend over 2.5 goals. Betting on Italy to score over 2.5 goals would provide even better odds.
