Spain and Croatia mark the first encounter in Group B, in what promises to be an exciting match-up in this fiercely competitive group. Spain qualified with absolute ease under coach Luis de la Fuente, winning 7 out of the 8 games, however, their performances in recent friendlies have somewhat differed after losing 1-0 to Columbia and then drawing 3-3 against Brazil. Croatia on the other hand, might have had some troubles along the way, but recent victories suggest they are going to be at their best coming into Euro 2024.
Bookies place Spain as the clear favourites for this game, however, we believe it’ll be a close contest between the two as Croatia should be able to withstand Spain’s bucket loads of youthful talents, that is until the second half at least. It was only last summer that Spain scraped a win over Croatia on penalties in the Nations league and with the current shift in Croatia’s momentum make betting on a draw an attractive option given the odds. Croatia’s squad, although ageing, consists of seasoned players like Luka Modric and Andrej Kramaric, however, Spain also have a lot of experienced players like Rodri and captain Alvaro Morata, and on top of that boast heaps of youthful talent like the Barcelona quadruplet, Pau Cubarsi, Pedri, Gavi and Lamine Yamal. With such an energetic squad, we see Spain wearing Croatia down eventually, and will start to open up in the second half. Our top tip, Half Time, Full Time – Draw/Spain 15/4 William Hill.
We expect a highly competitive match between these two highly ranked teams. Croatia’s seasoned players have the ability to create scoring chances of their own, but will likely fold under the immense pressure put on by Spain over the course of 90 minutes. Although both teams have the ability to create chances, we believe Spain will control the second half giving them more opportunities throughout the game.
While both teams boast attacking talents, Croatia will struggle to deal with Spain’s youthful squad. Spain’s energetic and high-calibre players have the capability to wear down Croatia’s ageing squad. Spain will look to take advantage of Croatia slowing down in the second half, utilising players like Pedri and Pau Cubarsi to break past Croatia’s slower players. Although we believe it’ll be a tight game, we predict Spain will clinch a narrow 2-1 victory.
Given the attacking capabilities of both teams, and the excitement around it being the first Group B game, expect a fast paced game with lots of scoring opportunities and goals on both sides. The offensive is likely to be relentless from Spain and Croatia are know for their counter attack style of football, therefore, we believe it would be wise to bet over 2.5 goals in this game.
