Sunday afternoon at St James’ Park, and Newcastle welcome Nottingham Forest in a game that both sides desperately need for different reasons.
Newcastle slipped to a late defeat against Arsenal last week, conceding two goals in the final minutes. Painful, but not disastrous – they looked competitive for most of it. Eddie Howe’s men know this is the kind of match they simply have to win if they want to push for Europe again.
Forest, on the other hand, are still searching for form. A 1-0 defeat to Sunderland told the story: plenty of possession, plenty of shots, but no edge. That’s been their problem all season. They’ve also looked fragile at the back, which isn’t great news when you’re heading to Tyneside.
So, who’s getting back on track? Let’s take a look.
The Magpies are expected to stick with their 4-3-3 setup. Nick Pope starts in goal, with Sven Botman and Dan Burn likely in central defence. Bruno Guimarães pulls the strings in midfield alongside Joelinton and Sandro Tonali. Up front, William Osula to lead the line with Anthony Gordon and Jacob Murphy on the flanks.
The injury list still includes Fabian Schär, Jacob Ramsey, and Yoane Wissa, while Tino Livramento remains a doubt.
Forest boss Ange Postecoglou doesn’t have too many fresh worries. Ola Aina is out with a hamstring injury, and Douglas Luiz is still sidelined. Murillo faces a late fitness test, but apart from that, the squad is close to full strength.
Expect a 4-2-3-1 system with Chris Wood leading the line against his former club. Nicolas Dominguez and James McAtee will likely be tasked with keeping midfield compact, while Callum Hudson-Odoi and Dan Ndoye provide width.
Newcastle: Pope; Lascelles, Botman, Burn, Trippier; Bruno Guimarães, Tonali, Joelinton; Murphy, Osula, Gordon.
Nottingham Forest: Sels; Williams, Milenkovic, Morato, Zinchenko; Dominguez, McAtee; Ndoye, Anderson, Hudson-Odoi; Wood.
I can see goals in this one. Newcastle create plenty at home, and Forest’s defence has been leaky all season – 13 conceded in their last six games. On the other side, Forest usually find a way to nick one, especially with Wood up top.
A few angles worth looking at:
Newcastle are going to dominate the ball, force Forest back, and create wave after wave of chances. Forest will try to stay compact, but their record away from home hasn’t been good, and they’ve looked soft when pressed.
I can see Forest sneaking a goal – maybe through Wood or Hudson-Odoi – but Newcastle’s quality should win out over 90 minutes.
Match Prediction: Newcastle to win. Bet with bet365.
I’m leaning towards a 3-1 Newcastle win. Enough attacking firepower to get the job done, but not enough defensive sharpness to keep a clean sheet.
Correct Score Prediction: Newcastle 3-1 Nottingham Forest. Bet with bet365.
The numbers point towards goals. These two have produced 25 goals in their last six head-to-heads, averaging more than four per game. Both teams have defensive gaps right now, so the overs market looks good.
Over/Under Prediction: Over 3.5 Goals. Bet with bet365.
Here’s a combo that fits how I see the game:
That’s your Sunday goal-fest special.
