Extra Places are one of the most common and most popular horse racing betting offers and available daily with some bookmakers such as Betfred.
They apply to Each Way bets rather than Win bets and give customers a greater chance of a return with bets placed on races that they’re available.
With Each Way bets, your stake is split into two bets. One half of your bet goes on your chosen horse to win the race and the other half goes on it to finish in a place position.
The number of places that a bookmaker will pay out on depends on several factors such as the number of runners in the race and the type of race it is.
There are standard place terms that bookmakers follow as shown below:
When Extra Places are available, a bookmaker will pay out on the place part of an Each Way bet on more places.
For example, if there were 12 runners in a handicap race, the bookmaker may usually pay 1/4 odds on the first three places. However, they may offer Extra Places on this race and pay out on the first four or even five places. Therefore, you have a much greater chance of seeing a return when Extra Places are available.
