Ayr Racecourse was opened in 1907 and hosts flat and jumps racing throughout the year on the two tracks. It has been voted Best Racecourse in Scotland and the North East nineteen times by the Racegoers Club.
The course is located on the southwest coast of Scotland and is considered to be one of the country’s premier racecourses that hosts prominent races such as the Scottish Grand National and the Ayr Gold Cup.
The first of the two courses at Ayr is the flat course which is used for races over distances of 5 furlongs to 2 miles and 1 furlong.
The flat course is left-handed and oval shape, measuring a distance of around 12 furlongs. It has a half-mile run-in along with a six-furlong chute which can be used for sprints.
Being a relatively wide track, it can accommodate fields of up to 28.
Featuring nine fences, the jumps course is left-handed and half a mile around. The course is predominantly downhill with a gentle rise to the finish line.
The course is used for hurdle races run over a distance of between 2 miles & 1 furlong to 3 miles & 3 furlongs and for chases from 2 miles to just over 4 miles.
