WhichBookie racing analyst Andrew Blair White provides a preview and betting tips for races at Roscommon on Monday 23rd May.
Doncaster is the oldest racecourse in the UK and one of nine just in Yorkshire.
It is host to the St Leger Stakes and the Racing Post Trophy, two of Great Britain’s 36 annual Group 1 flat races and two of the oldest races in the world.
Both flat and jumps races take place throughout the year at Doncaster with the course being flat, left-handed, pear-shaped and considered to be one of the fairest in the country.
The flat course hosts the first and last turf race meets of the flat season and is 1 mile 7½ furlongs around but also has a straight mile course which the Lincoln Handicap uses in March.
The course is essentially flat with the exception of Rose Hill which is a climb and descent along the back straight.
Although the ground can sometimes be rather testing, the fences on the jumps course are relatively easy. The course is again flat with sweeping bends and known to be fair.
Racing takes place throughout the year at Doncaster Racecourse but September is the biggest month by far with the St Leger Festival taking place.
The St Leger Festival is a four-day festival that is one of the highlights of the Autumn season and attracts visitors to Doncaster from all over the country and features both the Doncaster Cup and the St Leger Stakes.
Doncaster Cup – The Doncaster Cup was established ten years before the St. Leger Stakes back in 1766 and is Doncaster’s oldest horse race. It is the final race of the Stayers’ Triple Crown, with the other two being the Gold Cup and the Goodwood Cup. The race is held on the third day of the St. Leger Festival and is one of the country’s leading events for stayers.
St. Leger Stakes – From Britain’s five Classics that includes the 2,000 Guineas Stakes, 1,000 Guineas Stakes, The Oaks and The Derby, the St. Leger Stakes is the longest and last to take place in the year. It is also the final leg of the English Triple Crown.
