If you're looking for Hexham racing tips for today, here are some general tips to keep in mind for the track:

• Don't trust a horse that's clear early: The last part of the track is a steep climb from the end of the back straight all the way to the finish. Horses that kick for home too soon and look clear a long way out are often caught on the hill, so it's worth backing horses that finish strongly.
• Stamina matters more than speed: Hexham is a left-handed, undulating circuit of about a mile and a half, and the course is stiff even on good ground. On soft ground, it becomes a real test of stamina, so look for horses with proven form at the trip or further.
• Expect unseats rather than fallers: The ten fences per circuit are considered fairly easy, and few horses fall. The undulations do cause more unseated riders than you'd expect, though, so a reliable, balanced jumper with an experienced jockey is a good starting point in chases.

Hexham Race Course Guide

The Hexham race course is a left-handed, undulating circuit of about one mile and four furlongs, set in a natural amphitheatre with views across Northumberland. The track drops and climbs throughout. The main climb starts at the end of the back straight and runs all the way to the finish, making Hexham one of the stiffest tracks in Britain.

There are ten fences per circuit. The chase course runs inside the hurdles track on the near straight and outside it on the back straight, and the run-in after the last fence is about a furlong. As jockey Mick Fitzgerald put it, Hexham's ground "takes a bit of getting", and it can be a long way home if you start racing a mile out.

Position and Going

There are no starting stalls in jump racing, so the draw doesn't apply at Hexham. With such a stiff uphill finish, though, timing matters more than anything else. Hurdle races are usually run at a steady pace, and riders who wait until the climb before asking their horse for an effort often catch horses that went for home too early.

Hexham races from spring through to December, so the going ranges from good in the summer to soft or heavy in the late autumn and winter. The course is so exposed that wind and rain can change conditions quickly, and abandonments aren't unusual at the November and December meetings. Hexham's most historic race is the Heart of All England Maiden Hunters' Chase. It's a 3m 1f race for point-to-pointers that was first run in 1907, and it's still one of the most prized hunter chases in the North of England.

Ladies Day in June is one of the most popular days of the year, with best-dressed competitions for the best hat, best dressed lady, best dressed gent and best dressed couple. The 2026 Ladies Day was held on 21 June, and the Club Enclosure and hospitality sold out in advance.

Hexham also hosts Derby Day in June, when racing from Epsom is shown on the big screens with live music afterwards, along with summer evening meetings and a Christmas Jumper Raceday in December.

In November 2025, ITV Racing showed racing from Hexham for the first time, which was a big moment for one of the country's smaller independent racecourses.

History

Racing in Hexham dates back to at least the early 18th century. It was probably first held on Tyne Green from 1721, and the earliest detailed record is of a meeting in 1738 with a £20 purse. Racing later moved up to Yarridge Heights, but it stopped altogether in 1880.

Charles William Chipchase Henderson revived racing at Hexham in 1890 and bought the land in 1907. He also planted the copper beech hedges that still line the course. During the Second World War, the course was used as an ammunition store. Henderson's great-grandson, Major Charles Enderby, ran the course from 1990 to 2016, when Hexham and Northern Marts bought it. It's still independently owned and run.

In 2025, Queen Camilla opened the new Queen Camilla Stand and called Hexham "the most beautiful racecourse". She also recalled that No Trumps, owned by the late Queen Elizabeth II, won at the course in 2019.

Over the last three seasons, Simon England has been the leading chase trainer at Hexham, with 10 winners from 32 runners. Over hurdles, Sam Corbett leads with 11 winners, ahead of Nicky Richards and Jennie Candlish on eight each. Jennie Candlish's eight have come from just 25 runners.

Visiting Hexham Racecourse

Hexham Racecourse is at High Yarridge, Hexham, Northumberland, NE46 2JP, about 600 feet above the town. Hexham railway station is on the Tyne Valley line from Newcastle and Carlisle, and on most race days, free coaches run from the town's rail and bus stations to the course, operating on a first-come, first-served basis. Go North East buses also run regular services between Newcastle and Hexham.

Hexham races tickets are cheaper when booked in advance. Adult admission is usually around £12 in advance or £15 on the day, with concessions for over-65s. Under-18s go free with an adult, but they still need a ticket booked to register their attendance.

The Paddock Enclosure has several bars, including the new Queen Camilla Stand, along with a café, fast-food outlets, bookmakers and picnic benches around the parade ring.

There's no strict dress code at Hexham races. Jeans and shorts are fine, and respectable fancy dress is welcome, but football shirts aren't allowed. Because the course is so exposed, it's worth bringing warm layers even in summer.
