Kempton Park is a popular racecourse that is located in Sunbury-on-Thames, Surrey, just 16 miles from the centre of London. It’s a picturesque racecourse, having two lakes and 210 acres of grassland & woods surrounding it and is very popular with spectators all throughout the year.
Kempton Park has two courses, one floodlit all-weather track and one turfed jumps course.
Kempton Park Racecourse Jumps Track
The National Hunt course is a right-handed triangular circuit that is relatively flat and around 1 mile and 5 furlongs in distance. It’s host to some of the biggest races at Kempton Park throughout the year including the King George VI Chase on Boxing Day.
Kempton All Weather Track
Opening in 2006, the Kempton all-weather track is used for flat races from March through to November. It is a right-handed oval-shaped floodlit course that depending on whether the inner or outer bend is used, is either 8 or 10 furlongs.
The surface is Polytrack which is similar to Tapeta and one of the most popular all-weather racing surfaces that is relatively fast and fair to horses.

Kempton Park Feature Races
Kempton Park hosts racedays all throughout the year with some very notable races taking place.
The National Hunt King George VI Chase is perhaps the biggest and most prestigious and takes place on Boxing Day each year. The Grade 1 race is run over 3 miles with 18 fences to be jumped and has been won five times by Kauto Star and four times by Desert Orchid.
The Kauto Star Novices’ Chase is another popular race and takes place on the same day as the King George. In 2015, Lizzie Kelly became the first female jockey to win a Grade 1 race when competing in the Kauto Star Novices’ Chase with Tea For Two.
Another race to be named after a winner of the King George is the Desert Orchid Chase which takes place on December 27th. The Grade 2 race features 12 jumps and is run over 2 miles.
