Listowel is one of the best-loved racecourses in Ireland, and for one week every September, the whole of north Kerry seems to move to the banks of the River Feale. This page brings together Listowel racecards, results and racing tips, along with a guide to the track, the Harvest Festival and everything you need to plan a day at the Listowel races.
On every Listowel race day you will find the full racecard here, with runners, riders, weights, form figures and the latest odds. Results are added as soon as each race is official, including starting prices and tote returns.
If you are checking whether Listowel racing is on today, the racecard is the first place to look. Cards are usually published the day before, so you can study the runners for the Listowel races tomorrow as well.
Listowel races twice a year. A short summer fixture in June is followed by the main event, the seven-day Harvest Festival, which runs in mid to late September and is the longest festival on the Irish calendar after Galway.
The Harvest Festival has been the centrepiece of Listowel racing for well over a century. Crowds of more than 80,000 attend across the week, and the town fills up with music, markets and late nights.
The racing mixes flat and National Hunt cards across the seven days. Wednesday is the big one, when the Kerry National is run. It is a valuable handicap chase over three miles and one of the most competitive staying chases of the autumn, with Gordon Elliott and Willie Mullins regularly fielding several runners. The Listowel Stakes, a Listed race for flat horses, is the other headline contest of the week.
Friday is Ladies Day, with best dressed competitions and the busiest crowds of the festival. Book accommodation early if you plan to stay overnight, because rooms in Listowel, Tralee and Ballybunion sell out months ahead.
Listowel is a left-handed, oval track of around one mile and one furlong. It is flat, fairly tight and sits on the banks of the River Feale, overlooked by the town itself.
The short circuit and sharp bends suit nimble, handy horses that can hold a position near the pace. Long striding gallopers often struggle to find their rhythm, and races can be won and lost on the turn into the short home straight. Because the meeting falls in late September, the going tends to ease as the week goes on, especially after any rain.
Our Listowel tips are posted each race day, but a few trends are worth keeping in mind before you study the card.
Racing in Listowel dates back to 1858, when the first meeting was held on the island course beside the River Feale. The Harvest Festival grew into a social highlight for the whole of Kerry, and many locals still treat Kerry National day as an unofficial holiday.
Listowel Racecourse is a short walk from the town centre in north Kerry. Tralee is about 27km away, and the nearest airports are Kerry Airport at Farranfore and Shannon Airport.
There is no railway station in Listowel, so most visitors drive or use the extra bus services that run during the Harvest Festival. Parking is available near the course, but it fills early on the busiest days. Tickets can be bought online in advance or at the gate.
How to Watch Listowel Races Live
Racing TV carries every race from Listowel, along with the rest of the Irish fixture list. Its rights to Irish racing are secured until the end of 2029. You’ll need a subscription, which you can add through Sky or Virgin Media or take out directly via the Racing TV app. During the festival, the channel usually has its own presenters on course rather than relying on studio links alone.
TG4 is where to look if you want to watch the Harvest Festival without paying. The Irish-language channel first brought its cameras to Listowel in 2004 and hasn’t missed a year since. Its Rásaí Beo team typically covers six of the seven festival days, joining the action in the early afternoon and showing the stronger races on each card, Kerry National day included. Commentary and presenting are in Irish, and the festival coverage can be streamed on the TG4 Player from outside Ireland as well.
Bookmaker live streams fill the gap if you have neither. Plenty of online bookies show Irish racing to customers at no extra cost, though most ask that you have money in your account or have had a bet within the last day before the stream unlocks. The rules differ between operators, so read the streaming conditions before the race starts.
