Thirsk Tips

Thirsk is a relaxed and informal racecourse situated in North Yorkshire and hosts flat racing throughout the summer months. It’s a prominent venue in Yorkshire and one that is popular with family days out.

Racing dates back over 200 years at the old course in Thirsk but the current racecourse was opened in 1923.

Thirsk Racecourse

The course at Thirsk is left-handed and oval-shaped with a circuit distance of one and a quarter miles and a run-in of four furlongs.

The straight course is six-furlongs and slightly undulating, although, the round course is predominantly flat.

Thirsk Feature Races

Thirsk hosts only flat racing which takes place during the summer months between April and September.

The Thirsk Hunt Cup raceday in May is one of Thirsk’s main meetings of the year and attracts big crowds to the course.

The Summer Cup is another popular and significant fixture on the Thirsk calendar and takes place annually in August.

Betting Advice For Thirsk

• Left-handed, 1m2f oval
• Races up to 6f are held on the straight course
• Feature Thirsk Hunt Cup over 1m in early May
• Draw bias varies on the straight course but generally a high draw is preferred
• Charlie Appleby (4/7) with a 57% strike-rate is respected with his runners
• Sir Michael Stoute (4/9) for a 44% strike-rate does well at the track
• Roger Varian (9/32) with a 28% strike-rate wins plenty (shows a level stakes loss though!)
• Nigel Tinkler (3/29) with horses priced 40/1 or bigger. Handicaps he is 2/8 in this category with winners at 40/1 and 50/1 (the same race 2 years running – 2021 and 2022). Non-Handicaps his only winner in the price bracket was a 125/1 shot.

• Theodore Ladd (6/19 and 9 places) for a 31.58% strike-rate is respected
• Harry Russell is 6/32 for an 18.75% strike-rate here
• Daniel Tudhope (40/201 and 87 places) with a near 20% strike-rate is of note
• Jason Watson (6/26) for 23% is a jockey to consider
