If you're looking for Navan racing tips for today, here are some general tips to keep in mind for the track:
The Navan race track is a left-handed oval of about a mile and a half, with wide, sweeping bends. The home straight is about three and a half furlongs long and climbs from around two furlongs out, which makes the finish one of the stiffest in Ireland. A straight sprint course of just under six furlongs joins the main track at the start of the home straight.
Over jumps, the course is more rectangular in shape, and the chase track runs outside the hurdles course. There are nine fences per circuit, three of them in the home straight, followed by a run-in of about a furlong. It's a galloping track with no hiding place, so horses that get a breather down the back straight usually finish stronger.
The draw isn't a major factor at Navan on either the round course or the sprint track, thanks to the wide bends and long straight. Over jumps, there's no draw, but racing prominently can help on better ground, while on testing ground it pays to be patient.
The going at Navan is usually good or good to yielding during the spring and summer Flat meetings. From November onwards, the ground is often soft or heavy, and the uphill finish becomes a serious test of stamina. Waterlogging and frost can lead to inspections in midwinter, so check for updates on race days.
Navan also stages Grade 2 novice hurdles during the winter, including the Monksfield Novice Hurdle and the Navan Novice Hurdle.
Racing began at Navan in the early 1920s, and the course has been one of County Meath's sporting landmarks ever since. It's now owned by Horse Racing Ireland, and it holds meetings in every month of the year except August. In 2019, a new schooling track was opened on the inside of the main course, designed with input from local trainers. Noel Meade, one of Meath's best-known trainers, opened it in his role as chairman of the racecourse.
Gordon Elliott is by far the leading National Hunt trainer at Navan, with 222 winners. Willie Mullins (55 winners, 23%) and Henry de Bromhead (41) are next. On the Flat, Aidan O'Brien leads with 62 winners at a strike rate of 28%.
Ruby Walsh is still the leading National Hunt jockey at Navan with 104 winners, ahead of Davy Russell (98) and Barry Geraghty (90). Among current riders, Jack Kennedy has 68 winners at a 23% strike rate. On the Flat, Colin Keane is the leading jockey with 82 winners. Source: IrishRacing.com and At The Races.
Navan Racecourse is at Proudstown, Navan, Co. Meath, about 48 km from Dublin, and most racegoers drive there via the M3. During the Navan Racing Festival, shuttle buses run from Navan town, with pick-ups at the Ardboyne Hotel and The Fair Green in the morning and return buses for an hour and a half after the last race.
Navan races tickets can be bought online, and gates open at 10am on festival days. There's no formal dress code, but the Saturday of the festival features a style competition, so many racegoers dress up. With most of the jumps season in the winter, warm layers and waterproofs are a good idea.
Every Navan meeting is shown live on Racing TV, which covers all Irish racing in the UK and Ireland. Many bookmakers also offer free live streams to customers who have a funded account or have placed a bet on the race.
All the major UK and Irish bookmakers price up every Navan race. Look for Best Odds Guaranteed on Irish racing and extra places on big handicaps such as the Troytown Chase, which often attracts a field of 18 or more.
Check the fixtures table above. If there's racing at Navan today, the race card and race times appear at the top of this page.
Navan sometimes has to hold inspections in winter because of waterlogging or frost. Any inspection, delay or abandonment is shown on this page as soon as it's announced.
