Salisbury Racing Today: Racecards, Results, Tips & Fixtures

Home » Horse Racing » Salisbury Races

No races today.

Few racecourses can match Salisbury for history or setting. Racing has taken place on the downland above the River Nadder since the 1580s, and from the stands you look out towards the spire of Salisbury Cathedral. Today it's a summer-only Flat track, with 15 fixtures between May and October and a reputation as a nursery for top-class two-year-olds.

This page has the Salisbury races today, the latest results, the 2026 fixture list and a detailed guide to one of Britain's most unusual layouts.

Salisbury Race Card Today

When Salisbury is racing, today's card appears above with every runner's draw, weight, jockey, trainer and form, alongside live odds. The going and prices update through the day. On non-race days, the feed shows the next Salisbury meeting instead.

Salisbury Races 2026 Dates

Salisbury staged 15 Flat fixtures in 2026. The season ended with the Season Finale on Thursday, 1 October, which traditionally features plenty of two-year-old races.

Salisbury Going and Weather

Built on high chalk downland, Salisbury tends to ride on the fast side in midsummer, with good to firm ground common in July and August. It is exposed, so a strong wind can dry the surface out further.

Heavy rain at the start or end of the season is the main risk to fixtures. If there's a wet forecast, check the official going and any inspection notice on the morning of racing.

Salisbury Racing Tips

We don't have daily Salisbury racing tips at the moment, but these course quirks are worth building into your betting:

  • Stamina counts, even over sprints. The last half-mile climbs all the way to the line. Horses that race too freely early often stop in the final furlong, while those that stay on strongly can pick them off.
  • Watch the market for newcomers. Top yards use Salisbury to introduce their best two-year-olds. Mill Reef made his debut here in 1970. A well-bred newcomer from a big stable who is well backed deserves a close look.
  • Handy positions pay on the loop. In races run around the loop, the pace is often steady through the sharp right-hand turn. Horses ridden close to the lead tend to have an edge over hold-up runners.
  • Check the ground in midsummer. Fast going is common in July and August, which suits horses with good-to-firm form and can find out those that need softer ground.

Salisbury Race Course Guide

Salisbury isn't an oval. The track is essentially a long, right-handed straight with a loop at the far end, which gives it one of the most distinctive layouts in Britain.

  • The straight course: Races up to a mile are run on the straight, which has a slight right-handed elbow partway down. The final half-mile is uphill all the way to the post, making it a demanding finish.
  • The loop: For longer races, runners start near the stands, head away down the straight, go right-handed around a tight loop of about three furlongs, then come back up the straight. After the loop, there's a long run of around seven furlongs to the line. Jockeys say it feels like being constantly on the turn, and the tight bend can catch out big, awkward horses.

Draw at Salisbury

In sprints and races up to a mile on the straight, the draw depends on the ground and which rail is riding faster on the day. In big fields, runners sometimes split into two groups, so it's worth watching the first straight-course race before betting.

In races using the loop, a low draw can help horses secure a handy inside position before the sharp turn.

Big Races and Feature Days at Salisbury

Salisbury's programme is built around quality juvenile races and a handful of historic contests.

  • Dick Poole Fillies' Stakes (Group 3). Salisbury's top race, a six-furlong contest for two-year-old fillies run in early September. It was raised to Group 3 in 2014 and was worth £75,000 in 2026.
  • Bibury Cup. A historic 1m 4f handicap, run on Bibury Cup Day in late June and named after the Bibury Club that runs the course.
  • The City Bowl. A race said to date back to 1654, making it one of the oldest races still run in Britain.
  • Upavon Fillies' Stakes. A Listed race for fillies and mares. In its earlier form as the Upavon Stakes, it was won by Winston Churchill's Colonist II.
  • Ladies' Evening. Salisbury's biggest social occasion, held on Saturday 11 July in 2026, with racing followed by live music.

The Group 3 Sovereign Stakes, once the course's most valuable race, was dropped from the Pattern by the BHA in 2024, leaving the Dick Poole as Salisbury's only Group race.

History of Salisbury Racecourse

Written records of racing at Salisbury date back to the 1580s, making it one of the oldest racecourses in England. Races were run on the open downland above the city, and the City Bowl is said to have been contested since 1654. Two of the 18th century's most famous racehorses, Gimcrack and Eclipse, both ran here, in 1768 and 1769.

The course is closely tied to the Bibury Club, one of the oldest racing clubs in Britain. Founded in 1681, it took its name from the Bibury course in Gloucestershire, where its members first organised racing. The club began its association with Salisbury in 1899 and still runs the course today, and its name lives on in the Bibury Cup and the Bibury Club enclosure.

Salisbury has launched some remarkable careers. Lester Piggott had his first ride in public here in April 1948, aged just 12. Mill Reef made his racecourse debut at Salisbury in May 1970, winning by four lengths on the way to Derby and Arc glory, and Brigadier Gerard also raced here that year. Winston Churchill's Colonist II won the Upavon Stakes here before landing the Ribblesdale at Ascot.

In April 1979, American teenager Steve Cauthen chose Salisbury for his first ride in Britain. He won on Marquee Universal for Barry Hills, and exactly four weeks later landed the 2,000 Guineas on Tap On Wood.

The modern course has kept its focus on quality juvenile racing. The Dick Poole Fillies' Stakes was upgraded to Group 3 in 2014, while the Sovereign Stakes lost its Group 3 status in 2024.

Visiting Salisbury Racecourse

The racecourse is at Netherhampton, Salisbury, Wiltshire, SP2 8PN, about three miles south-west of the city centre.

  • By car: The course is signposted off the A3094 Netherhampton Road, with easy access from the A36 and A303. All car parking is free and close to the enclosures.
  • By train: Salisbury station has direct services from London Waterloo, Exeter, Bristol and Southampton. From there, it's a short taxi ride to the course.
  • Tickets and dress code: Salisbury races tickets are sold through the official Salisbury Racecourse website. The Bibury Club enclosure is the premium option, with a smarter dress code than the other enclosures, so check the racecourse's current guidance before you go. Popular evening fixtures and Ladies' Evening sell out, so book early.

The racecourse also hosts events away from racing, including the Rockbourne Fair shopping event and the annual Salisbury Fireworks.

How to Watch Salisbury Racing Live

Racing TV broadcasts every Salisbury meeting live. The course's biggest race days, such as Dick Poole Fillies' Stakes Day, are also sometimes picked up by ITV Racing. Many bookmakers offer free live streams to customers with a funded account or a bet on the race, and replays are available soon after each race.

Bookmakers for Salisbury Races

Salisbury cards are packed with lightly raced two-year-olds, so prices can swing a long way in the minutes before the off. Best odds guaranteed protects you if the price drifts after you've bet, paying out at the bigger starting price.

In the larger handicaps, such as the Bibury Cup, extra-place offers can add value to each-way bets.
