The reigning La Liga champions Barcelona are looking to get back to winning ways when they host Sevilla at Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys on Friday night.
Sevilla, who are 11th in the La Liga table, head into the game on the back of a 5-1 win against Almeria on Tuesday, which Barca, who currently occupy the top spot with 17 points, draw 2-2 in their latest match against Mallorca.
Barcelona had a six-game win streak in all competitions when they faced Mallorca on Tuesday. However, Xavi’s side forced to settle for the share of the points in an entertaining 2-2 draw.
Mallorca led twice on home turf, but Raphinha levelled the score at 1-1 in the final minutes of the first half. Fermin Lopez then equalized the score to 2-2, and Barcelona ensured that they were unbeaten in 2023-24 La Liga, having won five games out of seven, while drawing two.
Xavi and his team are currently top of the table with 17 points and face Sevilla before facing Porto away in their second Champions League group match next Wednesday.
Barcelona have adapted well to their temporary home, the Estadi Olimpic Luis Companys with work currently being carried out on Camp Nou. They have won all four games in all competitions so far this season, including victory against Celta Vigo last weekend despite trailing 2-0.
The Catalans have won their last three league matches against Sevilla who they haven’t lost against in La Liga for eight years.
Sevilla have struggled to find their feet this season. However, they have made progress in recent weeks and will be entering this match on the back of four consecutive unbeaten games across all competitions.
Jose Luis Mendilibar’s sides last defeat came in a 2-1 loss to Girona in August. They have also picked up seven points over their last three matches, moving up to 11th place in the La Liga table.
Sevilla are heading into Friday’s match on the back of one of their best performance this season when they thrashed Almeria 5-1 on Tuesday night with Youssef en-Nesyri, Dodi Lukebakio, Suso, Erik Lamela and Kike Salsa all finding the net for the hosts.
Los Nervionenses, who finished 12th last season in La Liga – their lowest position since they were relegated to the second division in 1999-2000 – qualified for the Champions League after winning the Europa League. They will play the second match of their group stage in the European competition next week away to PSV Eindhoven.
Pedri will once again be absent due to a thigh injury, but he is close to returning which will be a great boost for the team.
Frenkie De Jong will be out for six weeks with an ankle injury he sustained during Barca’s 3-2 victory over Celta Vigo at the weekend.
Polish international Robert Lewandowski will likely return to the starting lineup on Friday after being rested against Mallorca.
Jules Kounde is also set to be brought back to the XI. Inigo Martnez and Ferran Torres are likely to miss out. Andreas Christensen may have to settle once more for a bench spot due to Ronald Araujo’s return to health.
Sevilla has a long injury list, including Oliver Torres and Alfonso Pastor.
Lucas Ocampos may have to be content with a bench seat once more. The majority of the XI who took to the field at the first whistle last time against Almeria should retain their positions.
Sergio Ramos & Ivan Rakitic are likely to be recalled and En-Nesyri, who started and scored on Tuesday, should be the one to start through the middle again ahead of Rafa Mir.
Sevilla are heading into this match in great form and are capable of causing Barca problems. However, after dropping points to Mallorca in their last game, Xavi’s side will be eager to get back on track and three points is expected for the visitors.
