We don’t have any day-to-day Ascot tips for today’s races, but here’s some general advice to keep in mind:
Ascot is one of the world’s most famous racecourses and stages 13 Group 1 races every year which is more than any other Flat track in Britain. It’s all turf racing with the Flat racing taking place from May to October before changing to jumps racing from late October until spring.
The round course is right-handed and triangular, having a total length of about a mile and 6 furlongs. There’s a run-in of 2 and a half furlongs. This track has a long climb to the finish after dipping into Swinley Bottom.
There’s also a straight course that’s used for races between 5 furlongs and a mile. It runs uphill almost all of the way to the line also, so Ascot is one of the most all around toughest tests in British Flat racing.
The draw at Ascot generally isn’t a big factor on the round course. However, a very wide stall can be a disadvantage over a mile or a mile and a quarter in the big fields.
The draw bias on the straight course depends on the placement of the stalls and where the pace is. Having stalls on one side means that the runners drawn near that rail can have an edge. For fuller fields over a straight mile, horses racing close to either rail have tended to do better than those that stay around the middle.
The going at Ascot as a turf course varies from firm in the summer to soft or heavy in the winter. Improved drainage since the relaying means the jumps course doesn’t get as much testing as it once did.
Royal Ascot is the highlight of the year. It’s a five-day meeting in June and features 8 Group 1 races. The Gold Cup runs over two and a half miles on the Thursday and is the feature race of Ladies Day. Other Group 1 highlights include the Queen Anne Stakes, the Commonwealth Cup, the Coronation Stakes, and the Diamond Jubilee Stakes on the final day.
Aside from the Royal Ascot meeting, the biggest flat races at the track include:
In terms of jumps racing, the 3 Grade 1 highlights are the Clarence House Chase in January, the Ascot Chase in February and the Long Walk Hurdle in December.
Every enclosure at Ascot has its own dress code with the strictest rules reserved for the Royal Enclosure. The majority of race days sees smart casual being acceptable, although a lot of racegoers tend to dress up for the bigger meetings.
Ascot was founded by Queen Anne in 1711, and the first race was Her Majesty’s Plate, which ran that year with 7 runners. The straight mile was added in 1785 to introduce later races and sprint races.
The course got a big redevelopment in the mid-2000s, with the addition of a new grandstand and a changed jumps course opening in time for the 2006/2007 season.
Ascot Racecourse is in Ascot, Berkshire, SL5 7JX, which is about 6 miles from Windsor. Ascot station is a short walk away from the course and there are direct trains going there. Parking is also in abundance.
Tickets are bought through the official Ascot website, with prices depending on the enclosure and the meeting. The autumn and winter race days tend to be the cheaper time of year.
