The BBC Sports Personality of the Year, or SPOTY, as it is sometimes referred to as, is an award that is given out at the ceremony that takes place in December of each year.
The award was created in 1954 and has since handed out no less than 68 of the prestigious awards that recognise the finest sportsmen and women in the UK.

The 2025 BBC Sports Personality of the Year ceremony will take place in December with an exact date yet to be announced,
The ceremony will be broadcast live in BBC One with coverage starting at 7pm GMT.
The shortlist for the 2025 Sports Personality of the Year hasn’t yet been confirmed but betting markets are open.
2024 World Darts Championship and Premier League champion Luke Littler is the early favourite with bookies pricing the 18-year-old at odds of 11/8. British racing driver Lando Norris is in the running at a price of 11/2, with the likes of Lewis Hamilton (14/1), Lucy Bronze (20/1), Leah Williamson (20/1), and Jack Draper (22/1) following.
As the SPOTY date gets closer, the long list of nominees will be cut to a six-person shortlist prior to the awards.

There have been 71 winners of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year since it was created in 1954 with many sporting greats gaining recognition via the public vote for their contributions to their trade.
Only five people have won the award more than once – Andy Murray three times and boxer Henry Cooper and F1 drivers Damon Hill, Nigel Mansell and Lewis Hamilton winning it twice.
