Southampton joined the Premier League when it was created back in 1992 and had a thirteen year stint in the top-flight before being relegated to the Championship where they spent five seasons.
Following their promotion back into the Premier League in 2012, former Spurs & PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino took charge of the club and helped shape Southampton back into side that could compete in England’s top league. They had a relatively positive spell over the course of the next four seasons where they finished in the top 8 four year’s running with a highest season finish of 6th in 2016.
However, the last six seasons have been disappointing for Southampton fans with their side finishing in the bottom half of the table each year. The Saints were relegated back into the Championship following finishing 20th in the 2022/23 season, but managed to achieve promotion to the Premier League again after just one season via a playoff spot.
Current Southampton Manager
Following the sacking of Russell Martin in December 2024, Southampton appointed Ivan Juric on an 18-month contract.
Jurić is a Croatian manager and former professional player. After retiring as a player, Jurić moved into coaching, predominantly in Italy. He began as an assistant coach under Gian Piero Gasperini at Inter Milan and Palermo, before taking charge of Crotone, Genoa, Hellas Verona, Torino, and most recently, Roma.
On 21st December 2024, Southampton announced Jurić as their new manager on an 18-month contract, following the sacking of Russell Martin after a heavy defeat to Tottenham Hotspur. Jurić’s appointment is his first coaching role outside of Italy.
Who Will Be the Next Southampton Manager?
With Ivan Juric having recently been appointed as manager of Southampton FC, it’s unlikely that the club is looking for a replacement. However, Southampton are struggling this season and should Juric not be able to turn things around at the club, his position could be under threat towards the later stages of the season.
