RSM Classic Golf Tips & Odds

There is an excellent competitive field assembled for the RSM Classic this week at the Sea Island Club on St Simons Island in Georgia. A number of top European players have stayed on for a further week to play this tournament and that in itself may be a good pointer towards some value. 

Whilst this event was first staged ten years ago as the McGladrey Classic the set up changed in 2015 and since then the players have played two courses with the Plantation course being played in rotation with the Seaside course over the first two days and then the Seaside course used entirely by those player making the cut over the final 2 days.   

Both courses are relatively short by modern standards with the Plantation course measuring 7060 yards as a Par 72 and the Seaside links course generally playing somewhat easier even though it is a Par 70 at 7005 yards.  

Of the previous ten winners here, six of them were gaining their first PGA Tour win and the event is quite likely to feature many outsiders at the top of the leaderboard for much of the tournament. Both courses will suit shorter hitters as much as the longer drivers and both courses will yield many birdie opportunities. 

A good number of the players are coming straight from competing in last week’s Masters and those playing well at Augusta will be looking to make the most of their current form. Those players include CT Pan, Danny Willet, favourite Webb Simpson, Sungjae Im, Tommy Fleetwood, Jason Day and more. 

In an ultra-competitive field like we have this week I cannot recommend Webb Simpson at 10/1 although he has every right to be favourite and has great form coming into the week. In my view, he is simply too short in what is likely to be a birdie fest in the forecast fine weather and recent winning scores for the RSM Classic have been between -18 and -24. 

Second favourite Tyrrell Hatton is likewise passed over for similar reasons at 18/1 even though Hatton has great form around links courses. Instead, our first selection this week is Danny Willett who put in an eye-catching performance last week at Augusta and is available at 100/1 ! Willett eventually tied 25th at the Masters and has had some respectable form this year with a 4th place finish in the Rocket Mortgage Classic his best. However, we know Willett performs well on links course given his 6th place finish in last years Open Championship and T18 in the 2018 Open. At 100/1 he is well worth an each way bet.

Our second tip for the RSM Classic is Brendon Todd who has been playing well all year . Todd led the 2019 RSM Classic going into the last round and won the Bermuda Championship on links in 2019. Having missed the cut last week Todd will be keen to bounce back to form immediately.

CT Pan is our final tip for the 2020 RSM Classic and having finished T6th in the 2017 event here Pan showcased his excellent current form with a 7th place last week at the Masters. Having won last year’s RBC Heritage tournament at Hilton Head on links, Pan seems a very good price here at 70/1 with some bookies.
