Grade 1s aplenty across both days of the Dublin Racing Festival this weekend, and much will be dictated by ground conditions. Markets at this immediate pre-declaration stage don’t make much appeal from both a pricing and place term perspective, and the real battle will begin once we know declarations, jockey bookings etc.
However, there is also another Grade 1 this weekend in the form of the Virgin Bet Scilly Isles Novices’ Chase at 2.40 at Sandown Park on Saturday. Much like Leopardstown, Sandown Park’s ground will be very testing, however there isn’t a huge amount more rain forecast for the Sandown area and hopefully we see at least an all-chase card.
In a slightly ironic bit of tangency, the horse I’m going to recommend as a 7/2 each-way 2-star ** ante-post play for WhichBookie is trained by the man who has a predictable boatload of chances at the DRF, Gordon Elliott.
His Kala Conti has been mightily impressive since going over fences, including winning a Grade 2 at Cork last time pulling miles clear of the classy Kargese, and stopping the clock quicker than stablemate Firefox did when beating the likes of Majborough, Banbridge and Energumene in the Grade 2 Hilly Way later on the card.
Kept fresh for this stab at a Grade 1, Kala Conti is likely to have this race considered as her ‘Gold Cup’ for the season, and has every box ticked – ground, trip, fitness and track. Whereas those ahead or around her in the market all fall down on one or more of those factors.
