Sheffield United
WrexhamSheffield United have been quietly ticking along under Chris Wilder, grinding out results and making Bramall Lane a difficult place to visit. They are not setting the Championship alight, but there is a solidity to them right now that makes them hard to beat. Wrexham, on the other hand, are a club still finding their feet at this level. Phil Parkinson has done something genuinely remarkable getting them here, but the Championship is unforgiving, and the Red Dragons have looked vulnerable away from home in particular over the past couple of months.
Friday night under the lights at Bramall Lane. Two clubs at very different stages of their stories, but both with genuine reasons to want the three points. The Blades want to push towards the top half and silence any lingering doubts about their home form. Wrexham desperately need to arrest a run that is starting to put Parkinson under real pressure. Something has to give.
This Championship fixture takes place at Bramall Lane, Sheffield United’s famous old ground in South Yorkshire. The Blades host Wrexham in what shapes up as a genuinely intriguing Friday night fixture in the second tier, with both clubs carrying contrasting momentum and a fair bit riding on the result for different reasons.
Wilder has a few bodies missing and one or two question marks to sort through before finalising his lineup.
Wrexham are without a cluster of players who would have been key contributions in a game like this.
Wilder will likely set up in his favoured shape with a back four and a compact midfield engine room. With Bamford a doubt, the striker position is a real selection dilemma. Ayew would carry the attacking responsibility up top alongside Cannon if Bamford does not make it, while Brereton Diaz provides energy and directness from a wider position. Siriki is unlikely to start but offers something different off the bench. The back four of Choudhury, Tanganga and Kitching gives them real physicality against whatever Wrexham throw at them.
Parkinson does not have many options to shuffle, so his lineup almost picks itself. Moore leads the attack as the focal point, with O’Hare looking to find pockets of space behind him. The back five is solid enough in theory, though they have looked shaky on the road recently, particularly against sides who press with purpose.
Sheffield United have gone wins over Lincoln City and Bristol City, a 3-2 defeat to Portsmouth, and then a draw with Derby County in their last four outings. On the surface that looks inconsistent, but when you look closer, there is actually something to like about how they are building. Four points from two home games is a decent return, and the Derby draw felt like one of those frustrating nights where a 1-1 was probably not the worst result even if it left a sour taste. Bamford’s equaliser in the 79th minute showed they have that bit of quality to nick something when needed. They sit four points off the top eight, which is very much recoverable territory.
Wrexham’s form makes for less comfortable reading. Three wins, five draws and four defeats from 12 games. That draw count is telling you something about a team that cannot quite close games out. They beat Preston 4-1 in a result that looked like a turning point, only to go to Ewood Park and get beaten 2-0 by Blackburn the following weekend. Four away games without a win since a 3-0 hammering of Millwall back in early September is a run that is eating away at Parkinson’s reputation. The 2-1 home defeat to West Brom before the Preston win just added to the general anxiety around the club.
The form table does not lie. United are the more settled and confident side right now. Wrexham need a result badly, and that kind of desperation can either sharpen a team up or lead to mistakes under pressure. Based on what we have seen on the road recently, the smart money is on it being the latter.
The history between these two clubs in the EFL is short but absolutely loaded in Wrexham’s favour. The Red Dragons have won each of their last three EFL meetings with the Blades, and Sheffield United have not beaten Wrexham in a league fixture since 1983. That is over four decades without a win, which is an extraordinary stat however you dress it up.
Last season alone Wrexham did the double over United in the Championship, winning 5-3 at the Racecourse Ground in a result that raised eyebrows across the division, and then following it up with a 2-1 win at Bramall Lane. So for all that United are the in-form side right now, you cannot simply ignore that recent head to head dominance. Wrexham clearly have some kind of psychological edge in this fixture, and Parkinson will have made sure his players know it.
This is a game where the instinct says Sheffield United, but the head to head record and Wrexham’s ability to hurt teams keeps you honest. The Blades are the more consistent side right now, but Wrexham have genuine quality and a tendency to produce in this fixture specifically. A tight, cagey game feels most likely, with both sides having enough to cancel each other out at least partially. The markets we like most reflect that tension rather than a dominant home win.
Kieffer Moore is the pick here. The big striker has scored two goals in his last three appearances and will be the focal point of everything Wrexham do going forward. At Bramall Lane with Wrexham chasing an away win, expect the ball to find Moore early and often. He is a physical handful for any Championship back four and he knows how to make his runs count.
Yes feels right here. Sheffield United have shown they can find the net, and with Wrexham’s attacking quality through Moore and O’Hare, the visitors should create at least one genuine opening. The head to head record has produced plenty of goals, and the last two meetings served up fourteen goals between them. Neither defence is entirely watertight, so backing both to score makes sense.
Over three cards in this one is the call. This is a Friday night Championship game with a bit of needle in it given the head to head record, and Wrexham are under pressure in a way that can make them aggressive and desperate in the challenge. United’s midfield is combative too. Expect a physical contest where the referee will be busy.
A 1-1 draw is the most logical landing point. United have the home advantage and better recent form, but Wrexham have that uncanny knack of causing problems at Bramall Lane in particular. Both sides are likely to score, but a clean win for either feels unlikely given the context. A share of the spoils suits the form, the history and the overall feel of this fixture.
Over eight corners is worth backing in this one. Sheffield United will press forward at home looking for the decisive goal, and Wrexham will be happy to defend deep and hit on the counter, which tends to generate plenty of set piece situations. The Blades in particular are likely to pump in a high volume of deliveries from wide areas if the game is tight, so the corners market should deliver.
| Market | Selection |
|---|---|
| Both Teams To Score | Yes |
| First Goalscorer | Kieffer Moore |
| Total Corners | Over 8 |
Moore scoring in a game where both teams find the net and United push for a winner late fits the shape of this fixture perfectly.
Sheffield United are the better placed side heading into this and Bramall Lane gives them a genuine edge. Wilder has built a team that is hard to turn over at home, and they have not lost three consecutive Championship home games all year. But Wrexham are not here to make up the numbers. They have real quality in the final third, a striker in form, and a head to head record in this fixture that demands respect regardless of what the league table says.
On balance, the 1-1 draw feels right. Wrexham will nick a goal through Moore, United will respond through their own quality, and neither side will quite find the gear to push on for a winner. A point each, the status quo more or less maintained, and Parkinson under pressure once more heading into the next set of fixtures. Sheffield United 1-1 Wrexham.
