Barnsley
Oxford UnitedBarnsley are in freefall right now, and that is not a dramatic way of putting it. Six defeats in their last seven league games, a defence that has been porous all season, and a position in the League One table that has them looking up at almost everyone. Oxford United, by contrast, have quietly turned into one of the most composed sides in the third tier after a rocky start, and they arrive at Oakwell with momentum, a settled backline, and a striker who cannot stop scoring. The contrast between these two clubs right now could hardly be sharper.
Daniel Stendel needs a result badly. His Tykes have shown in the past that they can handle Oxford, and that history will be something he clings to heading into this one. But Aaron Ramsey has built something genuinely solid at the Kassam Stadium since that awful September defeat to Huddersfield, and his side look every inch a promotion contender right now. This is a serious test of whether Barnsley can find anything to stop the rot.
The game takes place at Oakwell, Barnsley’s home ground, in what is a League One fixture during the 2026 to 2027 season. Oakwell remains one of the more atmospheric grounds in the third tier, but Barnsley’s home form this campaign has not been giving the fans much to shout about. Oxford will arrive knowing a win here would keep them firmly in the conversation at the top of League One.
Barnsley have a few familiar names still missing, though Stendel has seen his options open up slightly in recent weeks with some players returning to the squad.
Oxford are dealing with their own absentees ahead of the trip north.
Stendel looks set to go with Cieran Slicker in goal behind a back four. With Connell returning from suspension, he slots back into the midfield alongside McGeehan, with the more creative players operating in the half spaces. Adeyemo leads the line up top.
Barnsley: Slicker; Noslin, O’Riordan, Shepherd, Kay; McGeehan, Kelly; Brownlie, Yoganathan, Cleary; Adeyemo
Ramsey will likely stick with a shape that has been working. Cumming starts in goal, with Kioso and Currie as fullbacks and a central partnership of Helik and Brown, who have been excellent. Brannagan pulls the strings in the middle, Harris leads the attack, and Goodrham provides that direct running from wide areas that caused Barnsley problems when these sides last met at Oakwell.
Oxford United: Cumming; Kioso, Helik, Brown, Currie; Brannagan, Sibley; Missanga, Goodrham, Dembele; Harris
Barnsley’s season has been a painful watch for anyone who follows them closely. They took one point from their first two games, steadied themselves with back to back wins, and then promptly collapsed again, losing six of their next seven. The most recent of those was a 2-1 defeat away at Reading, a game they were in before conceding late. That has become a pattern. They get into games, show enough to suggest they are not completely shot, and then the defensive frailty costs them. Twenty one league goals conceded already tells you everything about why they are where they are in the table.
The cup competitions have been no kinder. Fourteen goals surrendered across five cup games, an early exit from the EFL Cup, and they are propping up their EFL Trophy group. There is a fragility running through this squad that goes beyond just a bad run of results. Stendel will know that sorting out the backline is the most urgent job on his plate.
Oxford’s form makes for much more pleasant reading. Since that 3-1 home defeat to Huddersfield in early September, Ramsey’s side have gone unbeaten in the league, picking up 18 points from eight games and climbing to third in the division. The standout feature of that run is how tight they have been defensively, conceding just four league goals across those eight matches. Only Bradford City have a better defensive record in League One this season. When you combine that kind of solidity at the back with the firepower that Mark Harris provides up front, you have got a genuinely well balanced side.
The head to head record is one of the few things Barnsley fans can point to with a degree of optimism. The Tykes have won three of the previous four meetings between these clubs, including a 1-0 win at the Kassam Stadium in January 2024. That is not nothing, and it gives Stendel something to work with when he is talking to his players in the build up to this one.
That said, the most recent meeting at Oakwell ended badly for the hosts. Oxford came to South Yorkshire in August 2023 and left with a 3-1 victory, with Cameron Brannagan and Tyler Goodrham both on the scoresheet alongside a Jordan Williams own goal. Out of the previous seven meetings overall, Oxford have won just once, but that one win came on this exact ground. If you are looking for patterns, the home fixture does not carry the same comfort for Barnsley as the recent overall record might suggest.
The form book points firmly in one direction here, and while Barnsley’s decent recent record against Oxford adds a small layer of intrigue, it is difficult to make a serious case for the hosts given what we have seen from them defensively this season. Oxford have the tools to hurt Barnsley in behind, and the patience to take what the game offers them. The value is with the visitors in most markets.
Barnsley are a side under pressure, and desperate teams tend to pick up cheap bookings, especially when chasing the game late on. Oxford can be physical through the middle with Brannagan setting the tone, and Luca Connell returning from a suspension suggests a player who is not afraid to put his foot in. Expect at least three bookings across the ninety minutes, and the hosts are the more likely source of them.
Oxford’s defensive record is impressive, but Barnsley’s ability to ship goals is arguably even more notable. The Tykes have been conceding regularly, and while Oxford have been tight at the back, they have also been clinical when opportunities arise. A game that finishes with at least three goals looks a reasonable call, with Barnsley likely to grab one of their own even if the visitors end up running out winners. Over 2.5 goals is the lean here.
Oxford have the quality to win this comfortably, and Barnsley’s defence has shown repeatedly that it can be picked apart. A 1-3 scoreline feels about right, with the hosts snatching a consolation but the visitors ultimately being too good across the ninety minutes. That scoreline mirrors the last time Oxford came to Oakwell, which is not a coincidence given how both squads are currently set up.
Mark Harris is the obvious pick and not just because of his five goals this season. He got the winner against Stockport midweek, he leads the line well, and he is clearly the focal point of everything Oxford do going forward. Barnsley’s centre backs have been struggling all campaign, and a player who runs at defenders with purpose and has an eye for goal should find opportunities here. Harris to score first makes a lot of sense.
| Market | Selection |
|---|---|
| Match Result | Oxford United to Win |
| First Goalscorer | Mark Harris |
| Total Goals | Over 2.5 Goals |
Harris leading the scoring in a game where Oxford win and goals flow suits the form of both sides perfectly right now.
Barnsley desperately need a positive result, and their recent record against Oxford gives them a sliver of hope. But hope only takes you so far when your defence is leaking goals at the rate the Tykes have been this season. Oxford are a well organised, confident side who have not lost in the league since September, and they are not coming to Oakwell to sit back and play for a draw.
Ramsey has got his side playing with a clear identity, Harris is in the form of his life, and the away end is going to be loud. Barnsley will fight, they usually do, but the quality and momentum favour the visitors. Oxford to win 1-3, with the Tykes grabbing a late consolation that flatters the scoreline slightly.
