Peterborough United
Luton TownRobbie Savage needs a result and he needs it now. Peterborough United are still far too close to the relegation places for comfort, and with Luton Town rolling into London Road on the back of three straight wins, this is exactly the kind of fixture that could define where the Posh end up this season. Win it and Savage’s men can start talking about a genuine climb up the table. Lose it and the gap to safety starts to look a lot more precarious.
Luton, on the other hand, are sniffing around the playoff places and one more three points could take them into the top six. Jack Wilshere has his side playing with real momentum right now, and they will not be treating a trip to a struggling League One side as anything other than an opportunity.
This League One fixture takes place at London Road Stadium in Peterborough, with the Posh hosting in front of what should be a tense home crowd desperate to see their side turn the corner. The competition context matters here too. Both clubs were in the Championship not so long ago, and the paths they are currently on could not be more different. Luton are building, Peterborough are still searching.
Savage gets one key man back but still has a threadbare squad to work with, while Wilshere is dealing with a lengthy injury list of his own heading into this one.
Savage looks set to go with Bass in goal behind a back four of Johnston, Mendonca, O’Connor and Mills. Kelly and Ashfield should anchor the midfield, with Shofowoke, Williams and Edwards providing width and creativity around the striker. Leonard comes straight back in up top, which gives the Posh genuine quality in the final third when they get the ball forward.
Wilshere is likely to line up with Shea in goal, a back four of Jones, Andersen, Johnston and Naismith, and Walsh sitting in front of them. Richards, Donley, Mendel and Palmer should operate in the areas behind the striker, with Callum Marshall leading the line. Losing Wells is a blow but there is still more than enough quality in that Luton attacking unit to cause problems.
Peterborough’s form under Savage has been a mixed bag and that is being generous. Two wins, two draws and two defeats across six matches is not the kind of run that lifts a club off the bottom, and the midweek cup exit at Bradford City only added to the frustration. The Posh did outshoot Bradford, and Savage will point to that as a sign of progress, but League One does not reward effort without end product. Conceding 21 goals in a season already is the real alarm bell. Only two clubs in the division have shipped more, and until that back line tightens up, results will keep fluctuating.
Luton are heading in the opposite direction entirely. Three consecutive victories over Barnsley, Leicester City and Doncaster Rovers represents their best run of the campaign, and they have been averaging two goals a game across their last five outings. Callum Marshall is finding his rhythm with four goals for the season, and Donley showed against Doncaster that he can be a real match winner when given the license to get forward. The clean sheet problem is a nagging concern though. Five games without one is the kind of stat that will bother Wilshere, particularly heading into a fixture where Peterborough will be desperate to make something happen in front of their own fans.
The contrast in momentum is stark. Peterborough head into this having lost their last cup game and drawn their last league match. Luton arrive full of belief and with goals flowing. On paper, the direction of travel is obvious.
The head to head record does Peterborough no favours here at all. Luton have won both meetings between the sides last season and have not lost to the Posh since November 2018. That is nearly eight years without a defeat against this opponent, which is a remarkable run and one that Luton’s players will be well aware of as they prepare to make the short journey north.
Historically when sides carry this kind of psychological edge into a fixture, particularly against opponents who are low on confidence, it tends to show on the pitch. London Road has not been a happy hunting ground for Peterborough against Luton in recent memory, which makes their task this weekend even more difficult.
The angle here is fairly clear. Luton have the form, the quality and the psychological edge in this fixture. Peterborough have genuine attacking threat when Leonard is fit and firing, but their defensive frailties mean this game is unlikely to be a quiet one. Goals feel likely at both ends, and Luton sneaking it by a single goal feels like the most probable outcome.
This has the feel of a niggly one. Peterborough are a side fighting for their League One lives and Luton will not be giving them an easy ride. Expect the home side in particular to be physical in the challenge as they try to disrupt Luton’s rhythm. A game total of three or more cards would not surprise at all.
Callum Marshall is the pick here. Four goals for the season and clearly growing in confidence, with two goals in consecutive matches now behind him. He leads the line for a Luton side that is creating plenty and he looks primed to add to his tally against a Peterborough defence that has been leaking goals all season.
Yes feels right here. Luton have the attacking quality to score against almost anyone in this division, but they have not kept a clean sheet in five matches and Peterborough have Leonard back to lead the line. The Posh will push forward at London Road and with Luton’s defensive record what it is, there is every chance the home side find the net even in defeat. BTTS yes looks solid.
A 1-2 to Luton feels like the likeliest outcome. Peterborough grab something through Leonard or one of their wide players, but Luton’s superior quality tells in the end with two goals of their own, continuing their winning run and climbing into the top six in the process.
| Market | Selection |
|---|---|
| Both Teams To Score | Yes |
| First Goalscorer | Callum Marshall |
| Correct Score | Luton Town 2-1 |
Marshall opening the scoring fits perfectly with a game where both sides find the net and Luton edge it by a single goal, making these three picks a natural combination that reflects the likely shape of this fixture.
Peterborough will give this a real go at London Road. Leonard back in the side gives them a focal point, and Savage will have his players motivated after a frustrating week. But Luton are simply in too good a place right now to be stopped by a side still finding their feet under a new manager with a leaky defence and limited confidence.
Wilshere’s men should have enough to take the points north and keep their playoff push on track. Peterborough 1-2 Luton Town.
