Elche
ValenciaElche are quietly building something here. Five games unbeaten across all competitions, eight points from their last four league outings, and a growing sense that Martin Anselmi has got this side clicking at exactly the right time. Meanwhile, Valencia are drifting. Six points from ten league games, a manager under pressure, and a squad that cannot buy a goal right now. This fixture sets up very nicely for the home side.
Valencia have not won a league game since mid September. That is over six weeks without a victory, and the 2-1 home defeat to Villarreal last time out was another gut punch for Javier Aguirre. Los Che sit 19th in La Liga. That is not a blip, that is a crisis.
This is a La Liga fixture played at the Estadio Manuel Martinez Valero in Elche, with both clubs desperate for points at opposite ends of the table for very different reasons. Elche are looking to push further clear of the bottom three, while Valencia need a result badly to avoid falling even further adrift in the relegation zone.
Elche have a couple of selection concerns to manage, but overall Anselmi has a decent squad to pick from. Valencia, on the other hand, are genuinely threadbare going into this one.
Anselmi will make significant changes from the Copa del Rey side that beat Pinatar, restoring his first choice options across the pitch. Lemar slots back in, and if Nino passes his fitness test he will almost certainly start given his form this season.
Elche: Dituro; Buba Sangare, Redondo Solari, Chust, Revivo; Villar, Morcillo, Lemar; Cepeda, Nino, Valera
Aguirre has an injury list that makes selection straightforward for all the wrong reasons. With Elliott suspended and Otorbi out, the attacking options are severely limited. Danjuma and Guerra will likely lead the line, but they are working with very little around them.
Valencia: Dimitrievski; Maffeo, Tarrega, De Haas, Gaya; Raba, Rodriguez, Pepelu, Rioja; Guerra, Danjuma
Elche are genuinely in the form of their season right now. The 3-0 win over Rayo Vallecano last weekend was comfortable and confident, and they backed that up with a cup win over Pinatar in midweek. Their last league defeat came against Real Madrid in mid September. That is a tough side to lose to, and since then they have not been beaten. Eight points from four league games is promotion form, not relegation form.
The numbers back up the eye test too. Two wins, four draws and four defeats across ten league matches gives Elche 10 points and 15th place, which is modest but trending in the right direction. The performances have been solid without being spectacular, and there is a feeling that this side has more gears to find if they need them.
Valencia are going in the opposite direction. Just two points from their last four league matches, a home defeat to Villarreal, and a squad that is running out of fit bodies. Seven goals scored in ten league games is alarming, and the joint second worst attacking record in La Liga tells you everything about why they cannot get results. When you are not scoring, you are not winning. It really is that simple.
Across 58 meetings between these two clubs in all competitions, Elche have won 18, drawn 13 and lost 27. Valencia have historically had the edge, but the recent head to head tells a different story. Elche have lost just one of their last four meetings with Los Che, which is a significant shift in the dynamic.
Last season’s corresponding fixture ended in a 1-0 win for Elche at this ground, and the reverse fixture at Mestalla finished 1-1. History is backing the home side in this one, and current form amplifies that even further.
The case for backing Elche here is strong. They are in form, they are at home, they have recent head to head form on their side, and they are facing a Valencia side that is struggling to score, riddled with injuries, and carrying the psychological baggage of a poor run of results. The value points firmly in one direction in this fixture.
Valencia have scored just seven goals all season and are missing key attacking players through suspension and injury. Elche have been defensively solid in recent weeks. The case for both teams to score is not convincing here. No BTTS looks the smarter call.
With Valencia so toothless going forward and Elche not exactly free scoring either, this feels like a tight low scoring affair even if the home side get the win. Under 2.5 goals makes sense given the attacking limitations on the Valencia side especially.
Fer Nino is the standout pick here if he is passed fit, which looks likely. Six goals in ten league appearances this season is an excellent return, and with Lemar supplying the creative spark in behind him, Nino is well placed to get on the scoresheet against a Valencia back four that has been looking shaky.
Valencia are a desperate side coming into this game, and desperate sides tend to commit fouls when they are chasing the game or trying to stop a team in form. With the pressure on Aguirre and his players, expect some frustration to boil over. Over 3.5 cards in total is worth a look given the stakes involved and Valencia’s likely need to get stuck in defensively.
| Market | Selection |
|---|---|
| Match Result | Elche to Win |
| Total Goals | Under 2.5 Goals |
| First Goalscorer | Fer Nino |
A narrow home win with Nino getting the opener fits the profile of this game perfectly given Elche’s form and Valencia’s attacking struggles.
Elche have everything going for them here. Home advantage, momentum, a fit and largely available squad, and an opponent who simply cannot score. Valencia will make it difficult, they always do in derby style fixtures where pride is on the line, but their lack of firepower and the sheer weight of injuries make it very hard to see them nicking anything from this one.
Anselmi gets another three points and Elche move further up the table. Predicted score: Elche 1-0 Valencia.
