Gil Vicente
Vitoria de GuimaraesGil Vicente have been one of the tighter defensive units in the Primeira Liga this season, shipping just seven goals in their opening fixtures, but you would not exactly call them a goal machine at the other end. Eight goals scored puts them above only the bottom two sides in the scoring charts, and that imbalance is going to be tested hard by a Vitoria de Guimaraes side that just put five past Maritimo without reply. The Minho derby is always a tasty fixture, but the personal subplot running through this one gives it an extra edge that you cannot ignore.
Luis Pinto faces the club that sacked him back in March, the same club he guided to Taca da Liga glory in January before they decided to part ways. He turned down a chance to go back to Vitoria in the summer and instead threw his lot in with Gil Vicente. If ever there was a game where a gaffer would be pinning his tactical notes to the dressing room wall with a little more purpose than usual, this is probably it.
This Minho derby takes place at the Estadio Cidade de Barcelos, with Gil Vicente hosting Vitoria de Guimaraes in what is one of the more intriguing local rivalries in Portuguese football. Both clubs are operating in the Primeira Liga this season and the fixture carries genuine league significance for both sets of supporters, sitting as it does against a backdrop of contrasting form and some very pointed recent head to head history.
Neither side goes into this one completely clean on the injury and suspension front, which could influence how both managers set up their sides.
With Espigares suspended and Tchaptchet unavailable, Pinto does not have a great deal of flexibility in his defensive options, and Elimbi’s return is well timed given those absences. Expect Gil to set up in their familiar shape with a flat back four and two central midfielders providing cover, keeping things compact and making it difficult for Vitoria to build up play through the middle.
Gil Vicente: Lucao; Esgaio, Elimbi, Buatu, Moreira; Lausen, Prioste; Murilo, S Garcia, Martins; Kaba. Vitoria have a clear selection at the top of the pitch with Jakupovic having earned his starting place emphatically. Zych starts in goal with Gui still recovering. Vitoria: Zych; Strata, Borevcovic, Sidibe, Mendes; Nogueira, Doucet; Gustavo Silva, Samu, Camara; Jakupovic.
Gil Vicente came into this run of fixtures looking solid enough, putting together three league games without defeat and four across all competitions before Porto ended that sequence with a 1-0 win last weekend. Then came the midweek Taca da Liga quarter final trip to Estadio da Luz, where Benfica put four past them. Back to back defeats, conceding five goals across the two games, is not the kind of preparation you want heading into a derby. Pinto will be demanding a response, but the manner of the Benfica loss in particular will leave some doubts about whether Gil can carry a goal threat sufficient to trouble Vitoria.
Vitoria arrive in considerably better mood. Two wins without conceding on the spin, including that 5-0 demolition of Maritimo, has lifted Tiago Margarido’s side after a five game winless run in the top flight. It was only their second league win from nine matches, which tells you how inconsistent they have been this season, and they sit 13th with exactly ten goals scored and ten conceded. The balance in their numbers looks reasonable but the away form is a serious red flag. Vitoria have lost all four of their league matches on the road and remain one of only two sides in the division yet to collect a single point away from home. That context is absolutely central to assessing this fixture.
On the balance of recent form, Vitoria carry more momentum but Gil carry the home advantage and the knowledge that shutting up shop is something they are genuinely good at. The Roosters have conceded only seven Primeira Liga goals all season, with only Porto and Santa Clara tighter at the back. This does not look like a game that is going to be a goal fest, even with Vitoria’s recent attacking output factored in.
The head to head record is pretty uncomfortable reading if you are a Gil Vicente supporter. Vitoria are unbeaten in the last five meetings between these two sides, winning four of those five encounters. Perhaps more damaging for Gil’s confidence is the fact that Vitoria have kept clean sheets in each of the last four clashes. That is an extraordinary defensive record in a local derby context and it suggests Gil have consistently struggled to unlock Vitoria’s defensive shape regardless of where the game is played.
The hosts have also hit a rough patch on home soil recently, going three games without a win at the Estadio Cidade de Barcelos after winning their opening two fixtures there. None of that historical data points towards an easy night for Pinto’s men, even with the emotional motivation of facing his former employers firmly in the picture.
The tension between Vitoria’s superior recent head to head record and their genuinely dreadful away form makes this one of those fixtures where you have to pick your angle carefully. Gil are not going to tear anyone apart up front, but at home, with the derby atmosphere and a point to prove, they are unlikely to be rolled over either. The smart money seems to be on goals being at a premium and neither side pulling clear.
Given Gil’s low scoring output and Vitoria’s poor away record, this has the look of a tight, scrappy derby with neither side overly willing to commit too many bodies forward. Under 2.5 goals looks the sensible call, with both teams likely to prioritise defensive solidity over expansive attacking play.
Arnel Jakupovic is the obvious shout after bagging twice against Maritimo and he will come into this full of confidence. He is the focal point of Vitoria’s attack and the man Margarido will be looking to if they want to break Gil down. At a reasonable price for a first goalscorer market, he is worth backing to open the scoring.
Gil’s struggles in front of goal and Vitoria’s habit of keeping clean sheets against this opposition make BTTS a tough sell. Gil have only managed eight league goals all season and Vitoria have not conceded in this fixture across four consecutive meetings. BTTS No looks the more defensible position here.
Derby football always brings an edge to proceedings and this one carries extra heat given the managerial subplot. Both sides have players who will be desperate to make their mark and local rivalries in Portugal rarely pass without some lively challenges. Backing over 3.5 cards in the match looks a reasonable shout given the atmosphere and the competitive nature of recent meetings between these two sides.
With Gil set up to be compact and hard to break down and Vitoria likely to do a lot of their attacking in wide areas to try and exploit the full backs, there should be a decent number of corners generated throughout the game. Over 8.5 corners in the match looks achievable given Vitoria’s tendency to put crosses into the box and Gil’s defensive organisation which tends to push opposition wide.
A 1-1 draw feels like the most likely outcome here. Vitoria’s recent dominance in this fixture and the confidence they carry from back to back wins without conceding suggests they will find a way through, but Gil at home, motivated by their manager’s desire to face down his former employers, should be able to nick one back. Neither side looks capable of running away with this one.

A low scoring draw with just one goal and some needle in the midfield area fits perfectly with the defensive character of both sides and the combustible nature of Minho derby football.
This is a fixture caught between two compelling but opposing forces. Vitoria’s head to head record and their current momentum point one way, while their calamitous away form and Gil’s defensive solidity at home point firmly in the other direction. The managerial edge adds an unpredictable emotional dimension that could push the game either way, but on balance, a share of the points feels about right.
Gil Vicente 1-1 Vitoria de Guimaraes. Tight, feisty, and probably settled by moments of individual quality rather than sustained team dominance. The kind of derby that leaves both sets of fans with a story to tell but nobody with the bragging rights they really wanted.
