Who do you think will win?

Wrexham have earned their place in the Championship. Nobody is going to take that away from them. But right now, Phil Parkinson’s side look like a team that is beginning to feel the weight of this division, and on Wednesday night they have to welcome the team sitting at the very top of it. Can the Racecourse Ground atmosphere drag something out of this Wrexham side, or will Middlesbrough simply be too good?

That is the question running through this fixture. Boro arrive in North Wales with real momentum, real quality, and a genuine belief that they can go one better than last season’s playoff final heartbreak. Wrexham need a performance. Let us break it all down.

Wrexham vs Middlesbrough Match Details

This Championship fixture takes place at the Racecourse Ground in Wrexham, one of the most atmospheric venues in the second tier and a ground that has punched well above its weight since the club’s remarkable rise through the divisions. Middlesbrough make the long midweek trip to Wales as league leaders, while Wrexham find themselves down in 18th, scrapping to put distance between themselves and the relegation places.

Team News

Parkinson has some thinking to do heading into this one, with a few selection calls that could genuinely shape how Wrexham set up against the leaders.

  • Anthony Patterson has come under pressure after another individual error and could lose his place to Danny Ward
  • Danny Imray may come back in at right wing back after missing recent action
  • Sam Smith is pushing for a recall up front
  • George Dobson and Ben Whiteman are competing for the midfield role currently held by Ben Sheaf
  • Nathan Broadhead and Josh Windass are both absent through injury

For Middlesbrough, the news is relatively positive. Will Lankshear was taken off during the win over Charlton at the weekend, but Kim Hellberg played that down as cramp rather than anything more serious. The Boro boss may simply name the same starting eleven that secured all three points on Saturday. Alfie Jones and Rokas Pukstas remain sidelined.

Predicted Lineups

Wrexham are likely to line up with Ward in goal if Parkinson does make the change he is considering. Doyle, Worrall and Hyam should form the back three, with Imray getting the nod at right wing back. Whiteman looks the more likely midfield pick ahead of Dobson, and Smith should lead the line in what could be a more direct setup designed to make Boro work hard at the back.

Middlesbrough are expected to go with Vitek between the sticks behind a back four of Brittain, Phillips, Malanda and Borges. Berhalter and Morris look set to anchor the midfield, with Cozier-Duberry, McGree and Conway providing the creative spark behind Lankshear, who should be fit enough to lead the line.

Recent Form

Wrexham’s form makes for uncomfortable reading. They have won just three of their 13 Championship fixtures this season, and their last two games ended in defeats without scoring a single goal. A 2-0 loss at Blackburn was bad enough, but going down 1-0 at Sheffield United on Friday and failing to trouble the scoreboard again has cranked up the pressure considerably. Parkinson came out and publicly criticised his players after that one, which tells you everything about where his patience is. The playoff spots are still theoretically reachable, but at eight points adrift, Wrexham need to start winning soon rather than just avoiding relegation.

The one thing that has kept them afloat is their defensive structure. They have conceded only six more goals than the division’s best defensive outfits, which means the shape is there. The problem is at the other end, where they are not creating or converting enough to make that defensive solidity count for anything. Scoring against Middlesbrough will be a serious ask.

Boro, by contrast, are flying. Hellberg’s side have not lost a Championship game since a 2-1 defeat at Blackburn back in August, and four wins from their last five underlines just how consistent they have been. Thirty goals in 13 league matches is a brilliant attacking return, and the squad looks well balanced, with quality across every area of the pitch. The only slight concern is that they have conceded five times in their last three away games and have kept just one clean sheet on the road, so there is a vulnerability to exploit if Wrexham can get their noses in front.

Head-to-Head Record

These two clubs have already met this season, with Middlesbrough winning 1-0 at the Riverside Stadium in the EFL Cup first round. That result will give Boro confidence and perhaps make Wrexham feel the weight of a side that has already had their number once this campaign.

Beyond that cup tie, the head to head record between these clubs at Championship level is still relatively fresh territory given Wrexham’s recent climb through the football pyramid. What we do know is that Middlesbrough have already demonstrated they can shut Wrexham out when required, and they do not need to outscore teams to win games.

Key Stats

  • Middlesbrough have scored 30 goals in 13 Championship fixtures, the most prolific attack in the division
  • Wrexham have kept just three wins from 13 league games and failed to score in their last two matches
  • Boro have conceded five goals in their last three away fixtures, suggesting they are not completely watertight on the road

Wrexham vs Middlesbrough Betting Tips

Middlesbrough look the clear value here. They are the better team, they are in better form, and they have already beaten Wrexham this season. The one caveat is that the Racecourse Ground is a proper football atmosphere, and a home side with their backs against the wall can occasionally pull out a result. Wrexham have shown they can perform at home this season. But the gap in quality and momentum is hard to ignore, and the smart money is on Boro picking up all three points.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

With Middlesbrough’s attacking output and Wrexham desperately needing to chase the game if they fall behind, the conditions look right for goals. Over 2.5 goals looks a solid shout, especially given Boro’s appetite for scoring and the possibility that Wrexham push forward and leave gaps at the back.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Will Lankshear is the man to be on here. The Middlesbrough striker is their top scorer and, if Hellberg is confident enough to name him from the start after the cramp scare, he will be leading the line against a Wrexham defence that is under significant pressure. Lankshear has the movement and the nose for goal to get on the scoresheet early.

Corners Prediction

Middlesbrough are an attack minded side who love getting bodies forward and working the wide areas through the likes of Cozier-Duberry and Conway. Against a Wrexham side that defends deep, expect plenty of Boro pressure and a steady supply of corners. Over 9.5 corners in the match looks very achievable.

Correct Score Prediction

Wrexham may well nick a goal given Boro’s shakiness at the back away from home, but Middlesbrough have too much quality to be pegged back once they get going. A 1-3 win for Boro captures both sides of this fixture neatly, with the home side grabbing a consolation but ultimately unable to contain the league leaders.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

Yes is the call here. Wrexham are without a goal in two games but they will be desperate to perform at home, and Middlesbrough have shipped goals in three of their last four away fixtures. The conditions suit both teams finding the net, even if the scoreline ends up being lopsided in Boro’s favour.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
Match Result Middlesbrough to Win
Both Teams To Score Yes
First Goalscorer Will Lankshear

Boro winning while both teams score fits the pattern of their away form this season, and Lankshear leading the charge as first scorer ties the whole thing together nicely.

Final Match Prediction

Wrexham will give this everything they have got at the Racecourse Ground. Parkinson will demand a reaction, the crowd will be right behind them, and there may well be a spell in this game where you wonder if the upset is on. But Middlesbrough are a genuinely excellent Championship side, full of goals, full of confidence, and with a gaffer who has them set up exactly right for this level.

Boro have the quality to win here even when they are not at their absolute best. Wrexham grab a goal to give the home fans something to cheer about, but the visitors take the three points and keep their grip on top spot. Wrexham 1-3 Middlesbrough.
