Who do you think will win?

There is a genuinely interesting story running through this fixture. Frosinone have come back up to Serie A and, rather than just surviving, they have been proper competitors. Sixth in the table, wins against Fiorentina, draws at Genoa and Atalanta, a team playing with real conviction. And yet here they are heading to Unipol Domus with a hoodoo hanging over them that stretches back to 2013. Over a decade without a win at Cagliari. That is the kind of stat that gets under your skin when you are a supporter.

Cagliari, meanwhile, have gone from one of the more encouraging starts in the division to a team that cannot stop shooting themselves in the foot. Four defeats on the spin, twice throwing away leads against Roma and Lazio. Fabio Pisacane will be desperate to stop the rot at home, but the visitors are flying. Something has to give.

Cagliari vs Frosinone Match Details

This is a Serie A gameweek 11 fixture played at Unipol Domus in Cagliari, Sardinia. It is a ground that has become a fortress for the home side historically in this particular matchup, though Frosinone will fancy their chances of finally breaking that sequence given where both clubs currently find themselves in the table.

Team News

Both sides come into this with significant absences, and they could genuinely shape how the game unfolds.

  • Adam Obert is suspended for Cagliari after picking up a second yellow card late in their defeat to Lazio.
  • Alessandro Deiola is a doubt with a head injury, while Roberto Gagliardini is also questionable due to an ankle problem.
  • Alieu Fadera, Mattia Felici, Riyad Idrissi and M’Bala Nzola are all ruled out for the Sardinians. Nzola’s absence is particularly significant, as he has two goals this season and was one of the few players providing a consistent attacking threat.
  • Daniel Maldini is the only available Cagliari player with more than one goal to his name this term, sitting on five for the campaign.
  • Antonio Raimondo is out for Frosinone after coming off after thirty minutes in their win over Torino. Losing your top scorer, who has eight goals and accounts for roughly a third of your entire league tally, is a serious blow.
  • Florian Grillitsch has not featured since September with a thigh injury and is expected to miss out again.

Predicted Lineups

Pisacane looks likely to set up with Caprile in goal behind a back four of Ze Pedro, Mina, Rodriguez and Sugawara. Adopo and Romano should anchor the midfield, with Koffer, Maldini and Fazzini operating ahead of them and Mendy leading the line. Maldini is the focal point of everything going forward, and you would back him to be heavily involved.

Massimiliano Alvini will be working around Raimondo’s absence and the logical replacement is Daniel Birligea, who has been in decent nick after scoring twice in the 5-1 demolition of Lecce. Palmisani starts in goal, with Oyono, Monterisi, Calvani and Bracaglia across the back. Masini and Calo sit in the middle, with Ghedjemis, Schmid and Kvernadze supporting Birligea up top.

Recent Form

The contrast in momentum between these two sides is stark. Cagliari came flying out of the blocks, winning four of their opening five matches, and that early form had supporters daring to dream. But the wheels have come off in spectacular fashion. Four consecutive defeats to Monza, Bologna, Roma and Lazio is a rough run by anyone’s measure, and what stings most is the manner of some of those losses. Surrendering leads against Roma and Lazio shows a fragility at the back that opponents will be licking their lips over.

Frosinone have been one of the stories of the early season. Only Juventus on opening day and Napoli since have beaten them. They went to the Maradona and got hammered 3-0, fair enough, but everywhere else they have been competitive. A 3-0 win over Fiorentina, a 4-4 draw at Atalanta, points picked up at Genoa. These are not results a newly promoted side just stumbles into. Alvini has them well drilled and they play with a tempo that causes problems.

The one criticism you could level at Frosinone is they have not taken full advantage when facing teams who were struggling. Genoa are sitting in the relegation zone and Atalanta are not far off it, yet the Canaries drew with both. That is a minor gripe, but it is worth noting if you are trying to work out whether they can close games out against a Cagliari side that will make them work for it at home.

Head-to-Head Record

The headline number here is that Frosinone have not won at Cagliari since 2013. That is a long time in football terms, and it covers multiple promotions, relegations and entirely different squads on both sides. It is the kind of record that is hard to fully explain and tends to tell you more about patterns of play at a specific venue than any deep psychological advantage.

What makes this meeting different is the respective contexts. Frosinone’s last couple of visits to Unipol Domus came when the gap in quality between the sides was arguably smaller. Now you have a Frosinone side that is legitimately punching above its weight in Serie A, against a Cagliari team that has fallen off a cliff after a bright start. The historical record favours the hosts at this venue, but the current form picture tells a different story entirely.

Key Stats

  • Cagliari have lost four consecutive Serie A matches, surrendering leads in two of them against capital clubs.
  • Frosinone’s Antonio Raimondo had scored eight goals in ten league games, accounting for around a third of the club’s entire Serie A tally. His absence is massive.
  • Frosinone have won six of their last nine league matches and have only lost once away from home all season.

Cagliari vs Frosinone Betting Tips

The Raimondo situation complicates things for Frosinone, no question about it. Losing your top scorer and the player responsible for so many of your goals changes the dynamic significantly. But even without him, this is a side with plenty of quality and a Cagliari team on a terrible run that keeps giving goals away. Birligea is in form and the visitors have more than enough to get something here.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

Both sides have shown they can score and both have been susceptible at the back. Cagliari have been leaking goals during their losing run and Frosinone have shown they are capable of putting teams to the sword. Over 2.5 goals looks like a reasonable call here, particularly with Cagliari needing to attack to end their poor run.

Cards Prediction

Cagliari are under pressure at home after four straight defeats, and that kind of desperation tends to produce some reckless challenges. Frosinone play quickly and direct, which often draws fouls. Obert is already suspended after two yellow cards against Lazio, which tells you something about the edge in Cagliari’s recent performances. Over 3.5 cards looks worth considering for this one.

Correct Score Prediction

Cagliari have shown they can get on the scoresheet, and Maldini is a real threat. But Frosinone have enough quality to come from behind or shade it in a tight game. A 1-2 to the visitors feels about right, with Birligea stepping up in Raimondo’s absence and Cagliari nicking one but ultimately falling short again.

Corners Prediction

Frosinone like to get wide and work crosses into the box, and Cagliari will be pushing forward looking for an equaliser if they go behind. That combination of an expansive away team and a hosts chasing the game tends to push the corners count upward. Over 9.5 corners is a reasonable market to look at here.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Daniel Birligea is the man. He has two goals in his last outing, he steps into a starting role with something to prove, and Frosinone will be looking to him to carry the goalscoring burden with Raimondo out. He has the movement and the confidence right now to hurt a Cagliari backline that has been all over the place defensively.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

Yes. Cagliari have scored in their recent defeats and they have Daniel Maldini in decent nick up front. Frosinone have been scoring freely all season. Even without Raimondo, the Canaries carry enough of a threat from multiple positions. Both teams finding the net feels like a strong probability here.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
Match Result Frosinone to Win
Both Teams To Score Yes
First Goalscorer Daniel Birligea

Birligea scoring first in a game where Frosinone edge it and both teams get on the board ties together the form, the team news and the attacking patterns of both sides in one tidy combination.

Final Match Prediction

Cagliari desperately need a home win to stop the slide, and Pisacane will have his side motivated. But motivation alone does not fix a defensive unit that keeps throwing away points, and Frosinone are good enough to punish that. The loss of Raimondo is real, but Birligea is a capable deputy and the visitors have shown all season that they are not a one-man operation.

The 13-year hoodoo at this ground might just end here. Frosinone have the quality, the momentum and a home side low on confidence. Back Frosinone to win this one, with both teams scoring. Predicted score: Cagliari 1-2 Frosinone.
