Aberdeen
HibernianThere is something genuinely compelling about this one when you strip it back. Two clubs who should have more ambitions than their current league positions suggest, meeting at Pittodrie on a Saturday evening with both desperate for points. Aberdeen need to arrest a slide that is starting to look worrying. Hibernian need to prove their cup heroics were not a one off. Neither side can afford to lose, which often makes for a fascinating watch.
The subplot here is real too. Hibernian arrive having just beaten Hearts in a League Cup semi final, coming from behind to do it, full of belief under their new manager. Aberdeen meanwhile suffered their own semi final exit at the hands of Rangers and go into this on the back of three straight defeats. The momentum could not be more different between these two teams right now, and that contrast is what makes this fixture so interesting to any neutral with an eye on the Scottish Premiership table.
This Scottish Premiership matchday 13 fixture takes place at Pittodrie Stadium, the famous old ground on the northeast coast that has seen its share of memorable nights over the decades. Aberdeen are the home side hosting a Hibernian team propping up the table but arriving with more spring in their step than their league position might suggest. With Aberdeen sitting 10th and Hibs bottom, there is real pressure on both dugouts to deliver something.
Aberdeen are in the rare and welcome position of going into a match with a fully fit squad. Stephen Robinson has no injury concerns to manage and a full selection available to him. After the disappointment of the Rangers cup exit, Robinson is expected to ring the changes and freshen things up.
Hibernian have several players unavailable through injury heading into this one.
The plus side for Marink Reedijk is that Owen Elding, Jamie McGrath and Martin Boyle all came through the Hearts semi final in good shape and should start again here.
Robinson looks set to make a number of changes after rotating his squad for the League Cup. Cadden is expected to come back in at right back, with Armstrong adding quality and experience in midfield alongside Lewis Smith getting back into the picture in the final third. The shape should give Aberdeen a solid platform at home while allowing them to get forward with some purpose.
Aberdeen: Muller; Cadden, Happe, Molloy, Guinness-Walker; Lyons, Afeez; Smith, Nisbet, Armstrong, Mouloua
Reedijk has little reason to change much after the win over Hearts. The front three of McGrath, Boyle and Elding created real problems and generated nearly three expected goals between them. Expect the same attacking structure with Mulligan and Newell providing the energy in behind.
Hibernian: Sallinger; Passlack, Kerr, Ivezic, Mayor; Newell, Chaiwa; McGrath, Mulligan, Boyle; Elding
Aberdeen’s season has been a real grind. Three wins and two draws from eleven league games is nowhere near good enough for a club of this size, and the recent run of three consecutive defeats has piled the pressure firmly on Robinson. Losing to Dundee United and Falkirk in the league before going out of the cup to Rangers has left the dressing room low on confidence and the support frustrated. They are only two points above the bottom two, which puts this game in serious context.
That said, Pittodrie has been something of a refuge. Seven of Aberdeen’s eleven points have come at home, suggesting they are a different proposition on their own patch. The problem is that their home record still includes three defeats, so it is not as though they are a fortress either. They need a performance here, not just a result, to show some real signs of life.
Hibernian’s form looks grim on paper with just eight points from eleven games, but context matters enormously. Their away form has been decent, picking up seven of those eight points on the road with two wins and a draw from five away fixtures. The horror story has been at Easter Road, where they remain the only club in the division without a home win this season. That was the issue that cost David Gray his job in September. Under Reedijk the league results have not really improved yet, but beating Hearts in a cup semi final, playing with that kind of intensity and creating nearly three expected goals, is a significant moment for this squad. The belief that provides should not be underestimated.
Hibs had the upper hand in this fixture last season, winning twice, drawing once and losing just once across their meetings with Aberdeen in 2025 to 2026. Crucially, they won 2-1 at Pittodrie in October 2025, so they know they can go there and get a result. That is not a small thing for a squad that has struggled this term, knowing they have recent evidence that this ground holds no particular fear for them.
The head to head leans in Hibs’ favour coming into this one, and while home advantage matters in Scottish football, Aberdeen will need to be sharper than they have been recently if they want to reverse that recent trend against their visitors on Saturday evening.
The angle here is pretty clear to me. Aberdeen are low on confidence, missing momentum, and playing a side that just had a massive emotional and footballing boost. Hibs travel well this season and have beaten Aberdeen at Pittodrie within the last twelve months. Add in the attacking threat they showed at the weekend and there is a real case for backing the visitors to cause more problems here than the odds might suggest.
Both sides have shown they can be leaky and both need to attack here. Aberdeen cannot afford to be cautious at home in their situation, and Hibernian have the attacking quality to hurt them on the counter. Over 2.5 goals looks a solid call with both teams in situations where they have to commit forward.
This fixture carries some edge to it. Aberdeen are under pressure at home and Hibs will not be shy about being physical on the road. Expect at least three bookings across the ninety minutes as the game tightens up in the middle of the park. Over 2.5 cards is the call here.
Aberdeen will be pushing for the win and getting bodies forward, which tends to invite corners when moves break down. Hibs on the break will also draw corner situations as Aberdeen defenders recover. Over 9.5 corners is a reasonable expectation given the likely shape of this game.
Martin Boyle is the pick here. He was involved heavily in the Hearts win, he has the pace and directness to trouble Aberdeen’s back four, and he is the kind of player who raises his game in matches with something riding on them. Boyle to score first at a decent price makes plenty of sense.
Hibernian to edge it 1-2. Aberdeen will make a game of it at home and may take the lead given their decent home record, but Hibs’ momentum, their superior away form this season and the belief flooding through that squad after the semi final feels too strong to ignore. A comeback win for the visitors mirrors exactly what they did at Easter Road at the weekend.
| Market | Selection |
|---|---|
| Match Result | Hibernian to Win |
| Both Teams to Score | Yes |
| First Goalscorer | Martin Boyle |
Hibs winning while both sides score fits the patterns of this game perfectly, and Boyle as the man to open the scoring adds real value to the combination.
Aberdeen need this badly but need and delivery are very different things when a team has lost three on the bounce and the confidence is drained. Hibernian arrive with fresh legs, fresh belief and a proven ability to win away from home this season. Reedijk’s side have something to build on now after that Hearts result, and I think they carry that momentum into Pittodrie.
The Dons will make it uncomfortable and I would not be shocked if they go in front, but Hibs have the quality in their attacking third to find a way through. Aberdeen 1-2 Hibernian is the call, and it would be entirely consistent with what both teams have shown us this season.
