CompetitionFA Cup
Who do you think will win?

The FA Cup first round is where football gets genuinely interesting. No matter how many times you watch a non-league side walk out at a Football League ground, there is something that still grabs you. Barnsley versus Aldershot Town has that feeling about it, and not just because of the gap in divisions. The Reds are in a mess right now, winless in 11 and looking over their shoulders in League One, which means this is exactly the kind of fixture where a team two tiers below can sniff something. Aldershot will not be turning up at Oakwell just to make up the numbers.

That said, there is a real storyline on the home side too. Daniel Stendel came back to try and steady a sinking ship and the ship is still taking on water. A cup run, starting with a home win against National League opposition, could be exactly what this squad needs to remember what winning feels like. The stakes for both sides, in very different ways, make this one worth watching.

Barnsley vs Aldershot Town Match Details

The tie is played at Oakwell, Barnsley’s home ground in South Yorkshire, in the first round of the FA Cup. Barnsley enter at this stage as a League One club, while Aldershot came through the fourth and final qualifying round to earn their spot here, needing a replay to get past ninth-tier Tadley Calleva before that. It is a significant occasion for the visitors, who have only reached the second round once since 2015.

Team News

Barnsley have a couple of attacking absences to deal with, while there is also a question mark up front following an injury in the weekend draw with Oxford. Aldershot head north with broadly the same group that beat Gateshead, though there is a fitness concern in midfield.

  • Ben Hamed Toure is out for Barnsley with an ongoing injury
  • Fabio Jalo is also unavailable for the hosts
  • Tobi Adeyemo went off injured against Oxford United and may miss out, with Rylan Brownlie likely to come in up front
  • Jack Shepherd is available for Barnsley despite being sent off in their last league fixture
  • Conor Lawless was forced off during Aldershot’s win over Gateshead and his fitness is not guaranteed ahead of the trip to Oakwell

Predicted Lineups

Stendel looks set to go strong here, which makes sense given how badly Barnsley need a result to lift the mood around the place. Daniel Johnson could come into the starting XI in midfield alongside either Luca Connell or Patrick Kelly, and Reyes Cleary should keep his place on the wing as one of the more reliable performers in an otherwise struggling squad. The likely back four includes Jack Shepherd, whose availability is a boost after his red card, with the front position going to Brownlie if Adeyemo does not recover in time.

Aldershot should line up in a 4-2-3-1 not too different from what beat Gateshead last weekend. Tristan Abrahams leads the line and has six goals to his name already this season, so he is their main threat. Marcus Dinanga and Marcus Wyllie will push to start behind him. Michael Stickland and Kiki Oshilaja are solid enough at the back, and Dominic Odusanya will likely anchor the midfield with Lawless alongside him if he is passed fit.

  • Barnsley: Slicker; Kay, Gale, Shepherd, Larkeche; Connell, Johnson; Yoganathan, McGeegan, Cleary; Brownlie
  • Aldershot Town: Hayes; Stickland, Oshilaja, Dyce, Harfield; Lawless, Odusanya; Peart, Tuma, Sandah; Abrahams

Recent Form

Barnsley’s numbers make uncomfortable reading. Four wins from 17 competitive matches this season, and all four of those came in the opening six games. Since early September they have not won a single match in 11 attempts, losing nine of them. That includes four consecutive League One defeats heading into this cup tie. The 1-1 draw at home to Oxford on the weekend before this, where they went down to 10 men inside 10 minutes and still managed to level through Vimal Yoganathan, was about as much as they could take from that period. It showed some guts, but 23rd in League One with 22 goals conceded in 12 games is not a position that inspires confidence going into any fixture.

Aldershot’s recent form has its own problems. They had lost five in a row in the National League before their cup replay win over Tadley, then followed that up with a home win against Gateshead where Brody Peart scored inside five minutes. That put them 14th in the fifth tier, so not exactly flying either. The midweek National League Cup loss to Ipswich Town Under-21s will not have done the mood much good heading into a long trip to South Yorkshire.

Between these two sides you have a lot of inconsistency and shakiness in defence. Barnsley’s backline has been leaking goals all season and Aldershot had been in their own rut before back-to-back cup games gave them something to cling to. The form guide does not exactly point to a tight, cagey affair.

Head-to-Head Record

These two clubs do not meet regularly given the difference in their league positions over recent years, and there is no strong pattern of recent meetings to lean on heavily. What history does tell you is that Barnsley at Oakwell, even in troubled form, tend to show up for home cup ties when they feel the pressure. The fact that they reached the third round last season, eventually losing to Liverpool, shows they are capable of putting a cup run together when the mood is right.

For Aldershot, the second round feels like a mountain from here. The last time they got there was over a decade ago, which tells you how rare this territory is for them. Cup upsets against higher-division opposition do happen, but they tend to require a bit more solidity and cohesion than a side coming off a five-game losing streak can easily muster.

Key Stats

  • Barnsley have won just four of their 17 competitive matches this season, with all four wins coming before mid-September
  • Barnsley have conceded 22 league goals in 12 games, one of the worst defensive records in the third tier
  • Tristan Abrahams has scored six goals for Aldershot this season and is their standout attacking threat

Barnsley vs Aldershot Town Betting Tips

The obvious angle here is a Barnsley win, given the two-tier gap, but their form makes you think twice before backing them blindly. The goals market feels like the most interesting place to focus. Barnsley’s defence has been all over the place, Aldershot like to have a go, and you would expect Stendel to push men forward in search of the confidence-boosting win his side desperately need. That combination tends to produce an open game.

Corners Prediction

Barnsley pressing for dominance at home and Aldershot likely to defend deep at times and play on the counter, this sets up well for a steady stream of corners. Expect Barnsley to generate plenty of wide play through Cleary and others, and Aldershot to concede territory. Over 9.5 corners looks a reasonable call.

Cards Prediction

Aldershot will need to be physical and organised to stay in this, which means cynical fouls and tactical challenges are likely as the game wears on. Barnsley’s frustration if they go a goal up and cannot add to it could also bubble over. Over 3.5 cards feels like it reflects the competitive nature of a cup tie with a lot at stake for both camps.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

With Barnsley’s defence having been so porous all season and Aldershot carrying enough of a threat through Abrahams and Peart to get on the scoresheet, over 2.5 goals looks well worth backing. The hosts need goals to restore confidence, the visitors will not sit back and hope for a goalless draw, and both defences have shown vulnerabilities in recent weeks.

Correct Score Prediction

A 3-1 to Barnsley feels right here. The Reds have enough quality at home to put Aldershot away, particularly with Cleary and Yoganathan capable of making things happen, but the visitors have shown they can score and Abrahams in particular is not to be underestimated. A three-goal win for the home side with the away team grabbing a consolation seems the most likely outcome.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Tristan Abrahams is the name to watch from the Aldershot side with six goals already this season, but for the first scorer pick on a home win, Reyes Cleary is an interesting option. He is described as a star man for a reason, he operates in areas where he can get shots off early, and with Barnsley likely to push forward from the off, Cleary getting in first makes solid sense.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
Match Result Barnsley to Win
Over and Under Goals Over 2.5 Goals
Both Teams to Score Yes

A home win with goals at both ends and plenty of them is the clearest way to reflect what this fixture looks likely to deliver, and all three legs point in the same direction.

Final Match Prediction

Barnsley are a mess in the league right now, no question, but this is a home cup tie against National League opposition and Stendel will have his side wound up and ready to go. The gap in class between a third-tier squad and a fifth-tier one, even a Barnsley side this out of sorts, should tell in the end. The Reds need three points in any competition they can get them, and Oakwell should see them deliver today.

Aldershot will make a game of it, Abrahams might well test the Barnsley backline, but the hosts winning 3-1 feels like the most likely outcome. A cup run starts here for Barnsley, even if the journey to this point has been a painful one.
